I am in the process of putting together a new computer. I am leaning towards either the Gigabyte 8IEXP or the 8IGXP. They perform well and don't cost too much. My real dilemna is between the Intel 845E or 845G chipset. Any suggestions? Definitely comment on any other mobos you feel can stand up to the gigas.
Below are the system specs I am thinking about.

Antec Plus860
P4 2.4 GHZ w/ 533mHZ FSB
Mushkin 512 MB PC2100 RAM
ATI Radeon 9700
Dual Maxtor 80GB 7200RPM Hard Drives
Creative Sound Blaster Audigy Gamer

Well, you obviously have no need for the 845G integrated graphics, just go with the 8IEXP. I think that both boards are almost identical in features and performance. Your setup is almost identical to mine, so you might also want to check out the Abit SR7-8X, this uses the SiS 648. The SiS 648 chipset is coming out soon and will be used in the Asus P4S-8X and the Soyo P4S-648 Dragon Ultra also. These boards should have lots of features and have AGP 8X and DDR 400 support if you want it. They should be out and being sold sometime next month. Intel will also be dropping prices on Sept. 1st and your processor will cost about $193.00 USD. You could use the extra money to grab some PC-3200 from Corsair or Samsung. You can't buy the Radeon until next month so it might be worth looking into.

If that is your memory configuration, flip a coin. the only difference is the graphics portion. If you follow Bigbiggest advice on buying faster memory, then go with the 845G.

Man, I'd definitely suggest you get DDR333 or DDR400 and an SiS 645DX or SiS 648 based motherboard or get RDRAM and an RDRAM based mobo. PC2100 is going to kill your performance.

You did know that the SiS chipsets are outperforming the Intel DDR chipsets and have similar stability/compatability?

Now wait a minute everybody. Nepha, you should definitely go with the "G". You're all missing an important point. The difference between the 845E and G isn't just the graphics. The 845G supports (unofficially) DDR333, while The 845E only supports DDR266. Forget about the integrated graphics, this is a real performance difference. Of course, you'll have to get the faster memory to take advantage of it. Now, the problem is, the GA-8IGXP doesn't seem to be available (yet?)

Anandtech just did an article on the 845E and it DOES unofficially support DDR 333. Tomshardware is only on Part 1 of thier article. They will probably do the 845E next. Here is a link to the test setup in the anandtech review and they were able to use DDR 333. The 8IEXP was in the review. The SiS chipset is also in the review. It just shows you that it is a little bit faster.
