// BACKGROUND

While waiting for Blizzard to finally release the mythical 1.10 patch I
decided to try my hand at mod building. As it turns out it isn't that hard,
especially with the -direct -txt method that lets you run the mod without
having to stuff everything back into Patch_D2.mpq (more on that under MOD
INSTALLATION).

My first modification was to "improve" gems to the point that they were
actually useful. That was easy. I just doubled all their effects. And since
runes were in the same table I doubled their effects while I was at it.
After
playing a bit with the result I realized that it actually worked pretty
well. Using just runes and gems, even with no new rune words it was possible
to make a wide variety of items that would compare favorably with set and
unique items all the way through the end of Hell difficulty. For example:

You might not trade a Grandfather for it, but you'll be doing quite nicely
while you're waiting for one to drop. Of course getting the runes to make it
would normally be a major problem, so I fixed that too. And finding
six-socket
CBs isn't especially easy either, so I added some cube recipes to solve that
problem, and...

// OVERVIEW

The goal of Gemstone is to enhance the single-player Diablo II LOD playing
experience by providing a variety of new things to try while maintaining
game
balance. Here are some highlights from the current version of Gemstone:

// INSTALLATION

The -direct -txt Method
-----------------------
The advantages of the -direct -txt method are that it doesn't require any
changes to your existing game files, and it allows you to tweak the patch
using nothing more than Excel to edit the .txt tables. The disadvantages are
that if you're using a mod manager that works by swapping out Patch_D2.mpq
files, it won't work for this, and it won't work at all on the Mac.

Step 1
Back up your current single-player characters! They should work fine with
this
mod, but you never know. You should also be able to take your GEMSTONE
characters back to 1.09d, but I would recommend discarding any new items as
well as all socketed jewelry, gloves, belts, and boots. Also move all
inventory/stash/cube contents into an area the size of the originals
(upper/left) before you try it. You can back up your characters by copying
the contents of the Diablo II\save folder to another location.

Step 2
Extract the contents of gemstone_d2.zip into your Diablo II program
directory
with the "Use folder names" option selected. You should get a subfolder
called "data" at the same level as the current "save" and "support" folders
containing all the patch files.

Step 3
Launch Diablo II using the -direct -txt command line switches. You can do
this by opening a DOS box, through the Run command, or (preferred) by
creating a new shortcut on your desktop. To do this copy your current
shortcut and name it something like "Diablo II - LOD Gemstone Mod". Once you
have that right-click it and select "Properties." Find the "Target:" line,
go to the end, and type in -direct -txt. It should look something like this:

"C:\Program Files\Diablo II\Diablo II.exe" -direct -txt

Click Apply then Close.

Step 4
To see if the mod is installed and running properly, start a game and open
your stash. If it's bigger, you're on your way.

The Patch_D2.mpq Method
-----------------------
The advantages of the Patch_D2.mpq method are that it's simpler (only one
file
is involved), it works with mod managers, and it can be made to work on the
Mac. The disadvantage is that you have to swap the Patch_D2.mpq file in and
out to play on the realms.

Step 1

GENERAL

- The available storage space in the player's inventory, stash, and cube
have
been increased significantly.
- All normal monster resists (fire, lightening, cold, poison, magic,
physical)
have been capped at 75%. This eliminates the normal "immune" monsters
typically found throughout Hell difficulty. However unique monsters and
bosses can still spawn with immunities.
- The Hell difficulty chill and freeze duration reductions have been cut
from
75% to 50%.

- Poison Dagger duration has been doubled.
- Poison Dagger damage increment changed from 10/15/20 to 20/35/50.
- Poison Explosion duration has been doubled.

- Bone Armor effectiveness has been increased 5x.

- Holy Shield Smite damage bonus doubled.
- Fanaticism radius increased to 15 squares (was 11 squares). This reduces
the problem of the Fanaticism hireling constantly wandering out of
range.

Sorceress
---------
- Charged Bolt level 1 damage increased 100%.
- Charged Bolt incremental damage changed from .5/.5/1 to 1/2/3.
- Fire Wall casting delay reduced to 1 sec. (was 1.4 sec.)
- Meteor casting delay reduced to .8 sec. (was 1.2 sec.)
- Blizzard casting delay reduced to 1.2 sec. (was 1.8 sec.)
- Hydra casting delay reduced to 1.4 sec. (was 2 sec.)

- Teleport can be cast in town.

Skill Notes
------------
- Source damage is defined as the damage of the equipped weapon with all
applicable modifiers (armor, jewelry, charms, etc.) The most familiar
example of this is arrows and bolts which have no damage themselves but
instead do the damage of the bow.
- Incremental skill effects are the increment by which the effect (dmg,
range) goes up per skill level. It is listed as either a single value
which applies to every skill level, or as three values (v1/v2/v3) where
v1 applies to skill levels 1-8, v2 applies to skill levels 9-16, and v3
applies to skill levels 17 and up. An effect with a starting value of 4
and an increment of 1/2/4 would therefore progress as follows:

- The effect of all gems and runes has been doubled. Durations (freeze

for example) were not changed. Binary effects (Indestructible for example)
were not affected.
- The Zod rune has an additional "+2 to all skills" modifier.
- Chance Stones have been added. They can be used in the cube to gamble (see
Cube Recipes). They will drop throughout the game about as often as runes.
- Rings and amulets can be socketed (1 max).
- Gloves and boots can be socketed (2 max).
- Thrown knives and axes can be socketed (2 max).
- Thrown spears and javelins can be socketed (3 max).
- Belts can be socketed (1 max).
- Circlets and coronets can have up to 2 sockets, tiara's and diadem's can
have up to 3 sockets. They can be used for the "Lore," "Nadir," and

added. The actual number may be less depending on the size and quality
of the item.
- Rings and amulets may be socketed with the "magic", "rare", "set", or

- The rune promotion recipe (3 rune [nn] -> 1 rune [nn+1]) works all the
way up to rune 33 (Zod).

Chance Stone Recipe Notes

Chance stones produce random results when used in the cube. The background
story for them is:

Chance stones were originally produced by the thousands as simple gaming
die and distributed throughout the realm. Over the years numerous mages
have
enchanted them in various ways to try to swing the odds in their favor.
The
accumulative effect of this has made them quite unpredictable. When
combined
with the magic of the cube they sometimes fulfill every wish. More often
they do little of benefit, or even worse fail completely and destroy
whatever was being transformed.

The probabilities (chance %) for getting a particular result with chance
stones are:

Example 1, crafted ceremonial bow
The ceremonial bow is an exceptional item so it gets +1-2 class skills
and +1-3 of two additional skills. It is a weapon so it also gets
enhanced
damage. And finally all crafted items get from 1 to 5 random magic
prefixes/suffixes.

Example 2, crafted guardian helm
The guardian helm is an elite item so it gets +2-3 class skills and +1-3
of three additional skills. And since there are six different Barbarian
weapon masteries the crafting recipe calls for a second rune to select
the
desired mastery. Let's assume we're using r02 (Eld) as the 2nd rune. The
guardian is a helm so it also gets Enhanced defense. And finally all
crafted
items get from 1 to 5 random magic prefixes/suffixes.
+2-3 Barbarian skills (class skill)
+1-3 Axe Mastery (skill 1)
+1-3 Iron Skin (skill 2)
+1-3 Natural Resistance (skill 3)
+30-60% enhanced defense

KNOWN ISSUES
------------
- If The Gemstone or The Magestone is inserted into a socket while the item
is equipped the health and mana bonuses will show up in the red and blue
balls, but healers or potions won't be able to raise the available mana
and
health above their original values. To solve this un-equip and re-equip
the
item.
- Mana potions purchased from Nightmare and Hell difficulty vendors do not
immediately restock when purchased. Additional potions will appear for
sale
only when the vendor restocks.
- Only 50% of the enhanced damage from the Fanaticism aura is applied to
party
members. Unfortunately this also applies to the effect your hireling's
Fanaticism aura has on you. This has been offset by starting the
Fanaticism
hireling with a level 25 Fanaticism aura as opposed to the normal level 15
aura. Concentration will still provide a slightly greater damage boost,
however Fanaticism offers increased damage, increased attack speed, and
improved attack rating.
- Battle Orders, when cried in town, has no effect on the player's hireling.
It must be re-cried out of town for the hireling to get the benefit.
- There is a know bug with % chance to cast spells on items in
single-player.
The spell graphic displays but the spell itself has no effect on monsters.
A fixed D2Game.dll has been posted to the Gemstone website at
http://www.ghostwryter.com/gemstone.
- % chance to cast skills on weapons are not activated by the Barbarian's
Whirlwind attack (by design, no fix available).

Here are some tips for playing Gemstone. There are a lot of changes in the
mod and the adjusted skills and new items open up possibilities that weren't
really viable in straight Diablo II.

1. Read through the SKILLS section before starting. No skills have been
nerfed
so all your favorite character builds will work at least as well if not
better in Gemstone. However many skills have been enhanced to open up some
builds that aren't nearly as playable in the unmodified version. Here are
just
a few to think about:

- Elemental Druid (boosted elemental damage)
- Poison Necro (boosted poison damage, custom set)
- Ribcracker Druid (check out Ribcracker's big brother, Skullbasher)
- Plague Zon (no cast delays on Plague Javelin)
- Martial Arts Assassin (check out the new unique claws)
- Blade Fury Assassin (kicks some serious ass with a high damage claw)
- "Beekeeper" Sorceress (boost to Charged Bolt)
- Hammerdin (Concentration once again applies 100% to Ble...(message truncated)
