After buying the newest Splinter Cell game and realizing my X850 XTPE AGP card wouldn't run it, I began plans to upgrade my computer in about 7 months or so. With Crysis coming out and whatnot, I definitely would need quite the computer by then to run it, so I began to plan out exactly what I'd buy. After seeing that I'd have to spend roughly $1700 (lcd monitor included), I started to think... With all of the speculation as to which platforms Crysis will be released on, I could, for about that price, get a 40" LCD HD television, and an XBox 360, and game that route, while getting a great tv out of it, and still have an "up to date" computer that'll still easily run photoshop/audio recording/etc with no problem. My only problem is the decision with switching over from pc to console, and whether or not that would be a good decision there, and also, whether or not games that I'm looking forward to will be released on the 360 (Crysis, Bioshock). Thanks for your time and for your help in advance!

QFT, not gonna be another console port (ala Splinter cell).

Why do that? As painful as it is, go ahead and pony up for something that can do more than game - you'll be far happier with the purchase in the long run.

I think he was making the point that his current PC could already do everything apart from gaming. In essence, all of his upgrade is going on gaming - which seems expensive compared with buying a console.

Personally, I'd still go with the PC route though. This is largely because my favourite genre of game is strategy, and the PC is much, much better than a console for those type of games.
If you're mainly into driving/sports games than you may as well get a console if you already have a PC for internet use etc.

As for the OP - you might be able to take a third option; there are still some good cards made for the AGP port, so you may be able to get more life out of your existing rig by simply upgrading your GFX card. This will be a lot cheaper than upgrading your whole rig.

Yeh you can get a 1950 Pro I think it is for the AGP and that will do you for about a year. Saying that I am going down the patch of getting a new motherboard and DX10 graphics card but keeping the old normal DDR ram and the 3500+ I got, that might be worth a look.

Going for Vista then?

Already got it, using it with my X800 just now and it’s working fine. But for games like STALKER and ArmA I can see that I will need a graphics card upgrade. While ArmA does run at my monitors native resolution of 1680X1050 I can notice that it does not look as good as it should and have managed to get it to run at medium/high settings with about 25 – 30fps but I think it is about time to go for a new card now.

Oh and the new R600 with Windows Vista 64Bit should be sweet :)

Just in case you where wondering the boot time with Vista is barely anything even on a 3500+ so I don’t feel since I have 2GB's of ram that I will get my moneys worth on £500 worth of upgrades. Besides they done a test and it seems that DDR400 is just as fast as DDR533 anyway so what am I loosing, 2 or 3 FPS… I am sure I can cope with that if I have an R600.
