I have a P4 1.6 Ghz(400 Mhz FSB) on a Asus P4S533 motherboard along with PC2700 RAM. Can someone please verify what the following BIOS settings should be (NO overclocking, please.)

CPU/PCI Frequency: The options start at 100/33 and go to 115/38.

CPU/Memory: Four options: 1:1, 3:4, 3:5, 3:6.

Thank you.

If that's how the BIOS settings are labeled they're slightly misleading because the CPU frequencies you're listing are actually FSB (Front Side Bus) frequencies. Your CPU will be running at a fixed multiple of that.

That's a QDR (quad data rate) FSB of 400MHz system, so the FSB would be 100. Regular PCI frequency is 33MHz (and it's not something you asked, but just FYI - the AGP bus's spec frequency is 66MHz).

So you want the CPU(FSB) / PCI to be 100/33 for un-overclocked performance.

Now for the memory. PC2700 memory runs at 333MHz - 166MHz memory bus running DDR. So if your FSB is 100MHz, and you want the memory to be at 166MHz, then you want:

CPU (FSB) : Memory to be set for 3:5.

If I kept the 533 motherboard and the PC2700 RAM but replaced the P4 (400 Mhz FSB)chip with a P4 chip that runs at 533FSB, would I be correct in assuming the the CPU/PCI frequency would then be set at 133/33 and the CPU/Memory would then be set at 4:5? (I find it odd that the BIOS does not allow me these options; perhaps it would if the more advanced CPU is installed.)

Exactly. Your FSB would be 133MHz (for a QDR rate of 533MHz) and your memory would be at a 4:5 ratio to maintain the 166MHz (DDR 333 / PC2700).

Your current "FSB : Memory" ratios look like they're based on turning the 100MHz FSB into the "base" 33MHz and then multiplying by whatever. So I bet if you had one of the 533 (B) series P4s in there it would change to allowing 1:1, 4:5, and maybe even 4:6 (which would be 200MHz). I don't know this for a fact though. My current motherboard is an Asus A7V333. It supports a wide range of FSB frequencies, and FSB : Memory options of 1:1 or 4:5.

Cool, I was actually looking for this very info. Good posts guys. Most helpful. Thanks

(I'd be the guy with the same MOBO, same Memory, but the 533fsb processor)

Everything was set to "auto" and I wasn't sure if that was correct. This helps.

So thanks again.
