The only thing I have running is my firewall (and I had that on W98) but my
HD seems to do a lot of 'work' for no apparent reason. Is it one of the
'services' that MS automatically put on that's causing it?

You can R.click on task bar, select task mgr for whats running,go
to run, type:services.msc This shows what run in auto or manual
start mode, this can be edited by double clicking a service.Go to run,
type:Msconfig in start-up,list services that run in auto mode

Hi,
Likely it is indexing, and eventually it will slow down considerably. You
can disable the indexing on the general tab of the drive properties by
right-clicking it in Windows Explorer.

In addition to what others mentioned - you mention win 98. This tells me, if
you are using the same computer, that your computer might be old, low RAM,
slow, etc. What MHz speed are you talking? P3, or P4 or equivalent? How
much RAM? 256 MBs RAM is minimal with XP (I've heard systems running on 128
MBs RAM, but I can't say how well they'd do). If you're running a P3 and only
like 500 MHz & low RAM, this might be your problem. Maybe it is using your
hard drive for virtual memory because it doesn't have enough real RAM.
Of course I'm no expert, but I thought I'd throw that possibility in.

Indexing service and the System Restore are usually the culprits. Both can be safely turned off. In the case of system restore it's so poorly designed that you can never rely on the restore points to be there when you need them anyway. Use the NT Backup found in the start\all programs\accessories\system tools. If you have XP Home then it's on the disk in the valueadd\msft\ntbackup and can be installed from there by simply clicking the icon to install. Have fun.

It's an AMD 2600

512 of 3200, but running at 2700 because my MB can't handle higher

Not so fast! I have 127GB of space left on my shiny new 7200 drive
