Windows 8 upgrade offer for OEM copies of 7?

Built my first PC this week and am currently running windows 8 release preview.

My question is: If I buy an OEM copy of windows 7 right now, will I still get the upgrade offer ($15 or $40)? Or is that deal only for prebuilt PCs, and not for custom builds?

also, How much do you think windows 8 will cost if bought separately when it is released?

  1. http://windowsteamblog.com/windows/b/bloggingwindows/archive/2012/07/02/upgrade-to-windows-8-pro-for-39-99.aspx

"Starting at general availability, if your PC is running Windows XP, Windows Vista, or Windows 7 you will qualify to download an upgrade to Windows 8 Pro for just $39.99 in 131 markets. "

This makes me think that I can upgrade for $40. I am still a little unsure though.

I think I'm going to take my chances with an $80 copy of Windows 7 (w/SP1) from newegg's Columbus Day sale unless someone stops me in the next few hours

    Hi :)

NO.....You ONLY get the $15 price if you BUY A MACHINE from a retailer...NOT if you buy a copy of Windows 7...

    All the best Brett :)
  3. Yeah. I see that the $15 offer is for new, prebuilt machines. But it looks like the $40 upgrade offer will be there?

The perfect scenario for me would be to have both 7 and 8 in case I wanted to go back to 7 (which I have loved since upgrading Vista). If that can be done for $120 ($80 for OEM windows 7 + $40 windows 8 upgrade) then I'll be happy.
  4. You are correct, you would be eligible for the $40 upgrade offer.
