Hi all and hoping someone can help,
i've recently installed xp pro, but now find my cd's can not be read in cdrom or dvd rom. even though a disk is inserted, a prompt appears saying 'insert disk into drive'. i've checked thru properties and all seems ok. originally when xp was installed and i right clicked on a drive there was a sharing section, but now that is not shown. i have gone to window explorer and right click on drive hoping to find 'sharing' (as window help explains) but it is not there. i used to be able to see files listed on a cd but not now. weird to me but i ain't any geneous. any advised would be appreciated.thanks. geoff

See if this helps: "How to Troubleshoot Issues with Reading CD, CD-R,
CD-RW, and DVD Discs" (http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=321641).

thanks Thorsten for the help, but unfortunately none of the suggestions at the site were able to solve the problem.
the only one i couldn't do was the "test disc read with copy or xcopy". the suggested info to type at the command prompt did seem to want to work. i could have been typing it wrong with the <> \V etc, who knows.
a thought however, do you think nortons 2002 could be causing the trouble?
i previously had a 2004 trial of nav and i was able to read and use discs but when it expired i put 2002 back on about a week ago and it seems the problem of not being able to read discs has occurred since. (maybe i should uninstall and use zone alram or similar?
any thought about this?
thanks
Geoff
