I looked at some Linksys products, and they state I must have a "Network
adapter" in my desktop. What is this? I already have cable internet, is that
card the same as a network card?

By network adapter they mean the wireless network card equivalent. The
linksys wireless router send out a radio signal. Then you need that adapter
in your pc to receive that radio signal. However, you may also wire connect
your pc to the router but then what is the point in having a wireless
router.
