Ok, it seems Don Reba and the others will help you on the game's official forum. By the way, I've heard that the game needs the latest DirectX 9.0c installed (February 2007 version).
I found some info on that type of error: "0XC0000096 is a Win32 error code thrown as a result of a CPU interupt - while trying to execute a privileged instruction in user mode." I found that on some forum for programmers and I am not sure what that means.
I have S.T.A.L.K.E.R too now. What's really funny is that many people are experiencing problems with the game trying to run it on modern video cards and newest video card drivers, while I can run the game and use all of the in-game visual settings with absolutely no problems or glitches with ATI catalyst drivers from year 2004 or 2005! I can even setup Anti-Aliasing, Anisotropic Filtering and texture quality not only from the game, but right from the settings in the drivers and the changes work in the game. I use Catalyst version 04.5 (8.01-040421a-015419C) because I've noticed over time that it's the best version for my Radeon 9700 in both old and modern games.
By the way, the official minimum requirements are slightly misleading. It says you need Windows XP SP2, while in reality it's enough if you have just SP1. Service Pack 2 most likely increases the game's speed with dual core CPUs, though.

Well if you look at the fact how long this game is in development that should be no surprise at all. I do not think too many people have problems with the newest hardware. The game is kind of a resource hog is what i have heard from many different sources. I will probably pick it up and give it a try.
