Can this be done - install different hard drive?

I have a PC with Windows XP Pro installed onto the C drive, however it is
only 4 Gigs in size. The D Drive is a HD with 18 Gigs. I would like to
reinstall XP Pro onto the D Drive, then replace the C Drive with a drive
from another computer that is 30 Gigs and full of data. There is plenty of
space on the 18 Gig drive for XP to be installed, but will it nullify the XP
registration to move to another drive?

Any advice or help very welcome.

Cheers

Hi,

No it won't nullify it. I would remove the current C drive, then boot the XP
CD and install with the D drive set in the master position. Otherwise, your
boot files may still install to C.

There are various ways of doing this. Keeping things
simple, I would make an image of Drive C using Ghost or
DriveImage on to a CD-R set and then copy it to the
30 GB HD that has already been wiped clean. (XP might
need to be re-activated with MS, depending on how much
the hash count has changed due to the different HD.)
An additional benefit of this is having an image file
of Drive C at a known point in time.
