In the middle of normal use, computer became very slow. Went to reboot and at login screen the password box wouldnt accept any input except the spacebar

was able to login on guest account and switch users bt could not switch back to guest account. Also, computer is extremely slow.

It doesnt appear to be a virus!

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

Have you run an up to date virus checker? You can run stinger from Mcafee at:

http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger

To see if there is a process using up all your resources go to task manager by pressing ctrl-shift-esc, and then clicking 'Processes' and then 'CPU' twice, to sort by the highest use. Anything hogging CPU in here?

Regards
Dan

i did run a complete virus scan
most of my cpu is used up between explorer.exe and system idle prcsss. I dollowed some advice from another post and ran adaware and spybot in safe mode. When I was done i got all kinds of crazy stuff. when i attempt to open almost any folder or progtram (including control panel or regedit.exe ) I get the following error message: "This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Folders Option control panel." (which I do not know how to do,. )

So right now my system is ont he brink.

Any ideas how to restore any of this stuff ? Do I need to reinstall windows.

Thanks

That sounds very much like virus activity then. What virus scan have you run? Is it up to date? Try running stinger.exe from: http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger

You may need to run it in safe mode.

You can also try an online scan from:
http://security.symantec.com/sscv6 [...] &venid=sym

All the best
Dan
