Is MMC card the same as SD card?

I am confused. Need to buy a high capacity MMC card for my Nokia 3620
phone.
I saw claims on some forums that MMC, the Multimedia card is exactly
the same or is, in fact, a SD card, like the one, for example, I use
in my Axim.
Others disagree.

So, is it the same, is it interchangeable, could I use an SD instead
of MMC for my phone? ...Or, is there a difference?

Thanks

there is a difference....

do not put SD cards into a machine if it doesn't accept them,..all sorts of
things could happen including damage to both card and equipment

SD are second generation MMC cards. They are slightly thicker and add
additional circuits to protect digital rights.

Some other types of devices can use both SD and MMC ( some camera's for
Exmple)
but NOT in the case of ya Nokia Phone.
As it quite clearly states in ya manual and on the Nokia site that it use's
an MMC only
same as the 6600 does and various other nokia models.
Somebody did post this Question a few months ago, he had gone out and bought
a 256MB SD Card for his 6600 and wondered why
1, he had quite a job to shoe horn it in his phone
and
2, why it didn't work.

Hope that helps ya m8.

It depends on the device. I can use SD or MMC in my Axim X5 and my
Dimage Z1 camera.

THe thinner mmc cards will fit into that JVC floppy adapter.

Thanks,

if that's true, it's too bad, because I already have SD cards for my
Axim, that I was hoping to use in the Nokia. Lister, how come it
works in other devices, and not on the Nokia phone?

Any suggestions for cheap sources to buy a 256 or 512 MMC?

sd devices sometimes accept also mmc's.
The opposite is never true, especially because sd cards are thicker than
mmc's, so they simply can't be inserted in a mmc card slot. And if they
can't, there must be an hardware compatibility reason, don't you think?
Since the 6230 accepts mmc's, it doesn't accept sd's. It is also written in
the manual.
So: buy an mmc, like i did!

From the Kodak site CS6230 manual:

Kodak EasyShare CX6230 zoom digital camera
User's Guide
1 Getting Started
Inserting an MMC/SD Card

Your camera has 16 MB of internal memory. However, optional SD/MMC cards
provide removable, reusable storage for pictures and videos.
