2 quickies re: fire walls and quick launch

Just got first computer with XP.

1. Is the "built-in" firewall that comes with XP active? If so how do you
de-activate it? I'd like to run Zone Alarm instead. My new computer, an
HP, came with Norton firewall but I'm not going to activate it (gotta start
paying for updates in 60 days) but isn't there also one inherent to XP?

2. I made a short cut to Windows Explorer and put it on my desktop. I am
trying to drag it to the "quick launch" area of the task bar and it won't
let me do it. The taskbar is "unlocked." What's the trick?

Thanks,

Chet

Hey CGB,

No2 first. Did you try R-click drag and select "move here". It works for me.

Now, XP's ICF is not activated by default. You can go to Help and Support
and type "firewall". It will tell you how to enable or disable the firewall.
Personally, I don't care for anything from Norton.

Thanks. Right you are on copying the shortcut to the quick launch area. I
didn't know about the RIGHT click to drag.

In the process, however, I think I may have lost an icon for "My Computer"
on the desktop. Blank space on the desk top and I think My Computer used to
reside there. Is this supposed to be there and how do I get it back?

Thanks for the quick reply.

Right you are, Jax and Wes. That article and the descripton given by Wes
fixed it easily.

Many thanks. You may see a few more stupid questions from me now that I'm
just getting started on XP.

I posted questions re; XP compatibility with my scanner. Do you want to
take a stab at that? Look at microsoft.public.windowsxp.hardware for a
couple of posts today from CGB.

I'm having fun with the new OS but if I can't get my scanner and scanner
software to run, I may have to forget it. I can't afford to buy new
scanner/software when it has been working fine on Windows 98.

Well, I got it fixed. VERY arcane, obscure fix that I found searching
around the net. HP does not have drivers. Someone, somehow came up with
the idea of installing the software for Windows 2000 and running an
"upgrade" from an XP page. I put it all together and fired it up. The
"direct copy" portion worked (i.e. like a Xerox copy to a printer) but the
scan to files/pix, etc. didn't work. I associated the button on the scanner
with Windows scan/fax program and it works just fine (also made a shortcut
to this software for the desktop and all is well although only using "half"
of the HP software with half from MS. I'll take it!!

Apprecate your help and interest today.

Chet

CGB,

I read 'em. If HP doesn't have drivers for XP, your SOL.
My scanner is out in the garage because there are no XP drivers available.

HP Scanjet 4100c scanner has been discontinued.

Watch out for the popups!!!
Looks like it may have drivers here:

Hi Wes,

I don't know if this applies but, if XP drivers are not offered, in some
cases, K2 may work.

I couldn't find drivers for my UMAX when I upgraded to XP, but I stumbled
into a way to install the scanner.

Go to the control panel, select category view if it is not already
displayed. Select Printers and other hardware and you will find an icon for
scanners and cameras. Select Add an imaging device and see what happens.
