I recently upgraded to XP home, installed svc pack 1 and added a Plextor dvd-r (F:). I have a 20 GB Msxtor drive 0 (divided about equal into C: and E:) and a 60 GB Maxtor drive 1 (D:) on a 1.4 AMD athlon with Award bios 6.00. I added the Roxio Easy cd creator 6.11 and it defalted onto C:. When I try to use the program I keep getting 'not enough memory' msgs. So I bought a WD 120 GB and wanted to replace the 20 GB and do a clean install. I have very limited knowledge and I have tried to follow all the info from this site but when I try a cd boot from the Plextor I just have a blank screen. I also have a Hitachi CD-R (G:)(which I haven't tried to boot from). Is there some reason I can't use the 120 and I guess I should change everything to the ntsf instead of fat32? I would appreciate any guidance.

Since you mention FAT32, XP installations limit FAT32 to a 32gig maximum partitions, whereas NTFS does not have this limitation, and this is by design, and with good reason.

It also sounds as if you are replacing the smaller drive with the larger? Do you want to use both drives, or are you getting rid of the smaller one?

If you are just using the larger drive, then you'll need to use the utility disk that came with the new drive to install it for proper drive usage, and format it to NTFS (don't do FAT, it is a waste of space and real money). Then install XP accordingly. I would recommend highly that you don't place the whole install on the total 120gigs, maybe you should partition the drive as C: 25gigs, then leave the rest as storage, using NTFS on both. You can do this while installing XP when creating the system partition, then when you get back Windows, you can format the second partition in Disk Management.

Not enough memory is referring to physical memory (RAM), not virtual memory
(hard disk).
The PC will attempt to boot from the first CD/DVD player/writer it finds if
the PC is capable of doing so and setup that way in the bios. If the hard
drive you added is jumpered incorrectly, the blank screen may result.
Nowhere in your text does it say you were unable to use the 120GB hard
drive. If the bios summary has no mention of it, its probably not
recognized. Probably a improper jumper setting if its WD.
Yes, NTFS is probably the safest bet.
I had to read your post 5 times to figure it out. Put yourself on the
reading end next time.

Thanks for the input. Each time I attempted to install the 120, jumpered as a master, all I got was a dark screen. I'm not sure about checking the bios, or what I am supposed to check in the bios. I tried the 120 with the disk that came with it and with the XP disc. I only got it to recognize the WD set up disc once and I had no mouse or keyboard control other than arrows and enter and those commands alone would not let me complete all the questions so I finally had to turn it off to get out. I am attempting to replace the 20 with the 120 and have the 60 as a slave. I don't care whether the 60 or the 120 is the master, unless someone tells me there is a reason to have it one way or the other. Sorry, but I'm not sure how much info to give so I probably do sound wordy. I wish my kids or my grandkids were more into computers so they could handle this. I still appreciate the help.

There's two ways to jumper a WD hard drive master. One form is default from
that factory, which is master alone. The other which the installer must set
jumpers which is master with slave. You have the latter condition.
