Scanjet 5370c lamp flashing

I accidentally operated the scanner while the lamp carrier latch was locked.
There was a loud ratchet sound and now, with the latch disengaged, all I can
get is the lamp flashing continuously in a sequence of six flashes followed
by a short pause.

The software reports "Scanner not found".

The FAQ's on the HP site say that it is a hardware diagnostic condition, but
the suggested action does not help.

Can anyone suggest a fix for this problem, please.
