I thought this was an interesting article from CNN money. I thought it was interesting that they were blaming some of the failure on the controller though. So far though, the PS3 is still showing less than stellar sales, and they have dropped off in Europe. My opinion is pretty much the same as everyone else, they priced it to high. If they lowered the price to match the 360 it would be a MUCH better selling console.
I wouldn't say the controller is so much where Sony went wrong as where Nintendo did right.
Yeah price is easily what stopped the PS3 from doing well. The PS3 though more accurately should be compared to the 360. The Xbox 360 and the PS3 are aggressively going after the same market segment while Nintendo is going after new markets entirely.
Between the 360 and the PS3 the 360 is $200 cheaper and performs pretty much equally well, has a MUCH larger game library, and has an already matured online system.
The choice is obvious and not surprising at all. Gamers predominantly went with the 360. The people who would often go for the Playstation for the RPGs and such are not the same kind of gamers who are willing to plunk down top dollar for the most expensive console. They gutted a majority of their largest market right there. Then they were aggressively targeting the people who DO obsess about console FPSs and are willing to thunk down the money... those people already largely sided with Microsoft.
With their pricetag Sony ostracized the majority of their current markets, and provided and unattractive alternative to a market they barely even had before and completely ignoring any new markets at all.
It was just poorly thought out and egotistical of them. Now they reap what they sowed.
I agree that Sony shouldn`t be too concerned about Nintendo`s success. What they really should be worrying about is the fact that the Xbox 360 is outselling the PS3 in North America (not sure about Europe, maybe there too?).
The PS3`s major "problem" is the Blue Ray player. It`s the reason the console is so expensive and therefore also the reason why the sales aren`t too good. Thing is though we also have to look to the future. A couple of years from now Blue Ray might be hot property and so buying a PS3 will be a pretty attractive option. By then production costs should also have dropped substantially to allow for a price cut or two.
Thinking long term though Microsoft rears its ugly head again. Maybe by the time people want a Blue Ray player the next Xbox will be released with much more powerful hardware and an HD player to boot. Or maybe Blue Ray will die a death and the PS3 will bomb even worse than it`s doing now. Who knows? Sony sure as hell don`t and they`ve taken a gamble that things will hopefully go their way. If they don`t go their way then maybe we`ll never even see a PS4. I wouldn`t be too worried about it though, at least our good friends Microsoft and Nintendo will be there to pick up the slack.
