Has anyone ever noticed how 90%+ of posts on the threads here tend to be in threads started by Trolls, or threads where a Troll comes in and turns up the heat?

It seems people love to argue on and on and on and on trying to change the minds of the most closed-minded people. (human nature at it's best/worst?) I personally love a good debate, but I can also see when people who *know* they are talking bs are just doing it to get a rise out of people (and it always works...)

It doesn't surprise me one bit, but I thought I would just point this out for all of the 'Troll haters' - especially those who expend great energy responding to trolls and fighting with them. Troll induced posting is the lifeblood of the forums - at least currently. .... is that a good thing or a bad thing... ?

90%? I don't think it's that high.

Here is a quick sampling...

The first page of threads I saw listed before coming in and reading your post had the following post counts: 1,2,5,35,12,312,32,30,9,124

The 312 and 124 are 100% troll threads.. just big arguments in threads started by Intel trolls. The 35 and 32 sized threads are titled "Attacking Intel" and "Intel's Dirty Tricks"... not 100% troll started/intentioned, but certainly the divisive/argumentative nature of those threads (Intel vs AMD) is fueling them on.

That gives 312 + 124 + 30 + 32 = 498 posts in Intel vs AMD Troll fued threads. There are 59 additional posts to account for.

59 / 557 = 10.6% non-troll thread posts

...that coincidentally worked out nicely for me... but I'll take it... :)

It also is worth noting that the thread with 30 posts is for comparing bare-bones Intel vs AMD systems. I don't consider that a troll started/based thread however (although I haven't read the posts to see if it has degenerated into such...)

PS - The exact % doesn't really matter.... it is a 'majority' of posts.

It's higher than 50% though. Most of the realy long threads are started about THG articles, by newbies who inadvertantly (I hope) make a post that is a flame war waiting to happen ("What's better, AMD or Intel?","My Athlon XP isn't running at 2.0 GHZ", ect), or by a "troll" posting something outragous or just slanderous.

Now, the THG article discussions are good, and tend to bring about some great discussion.

The Newbie posts are welcome, as they are often asking questions that they truely don't know better than to ask. Not everyone is a computer guru. Granted, some of them seem like they are simply flame bait made by trolls, but I'm sure most of them are legitimate issues.

As for the Troll posts, they let us debunk any myths that these trolls may start.

Bad trolls Bad trolls... Whacha gonna do... Whacha gonna do when they post here too...

Well said Bront!

The thing that really clued me in is that everyone here seems to hate AMDMeltdown... yet ANY thread he starts seems to grow like a weed and get well over 100 posts. ... human nature at it's best..... like flies to sh*t... :)

Ah, I see what you're saying. I thought you meant 90% of all posts are by trolls, not that 90% of all threads end up as troll arguments (or however you want to put it).
Makes sense then, I agree.

Much higher than that, probably close to 170%.

we definitely need mods on here that can enforce some rules (and maybe conduct). don't get me wrong, nothing against fredi. but he can't do it all, from maintaining the site to moderator, and it shows. i'm on a couple other boards and there is no where near the amount of trolling/flaming/etc there is here. no intel vs. amd, no sony vs. canon, etc, etc, etc. only been here a bit over 6 months, i don't know if i just didn't notice it before or if it wasn't there, but all this flaming and everything is out of hand now. there are few threads on this whole forum where there is not a flame. yes, people should be able to post what they want and we should just let the morons spin themselves into a frenzy and ignore them. but it's kind of hard when you have to sift through gobs of bullshit. i think some kind of ban should be introduced on an ip instead of names. then have some examples be made. that way they know and won't even bother starting anything. that's one thing with the other boards. mods are there, always posting, but i have yet to see them have to step in and stop some flame/bs spree. but here it's all out crazy. are we the "white trash" of tech forums?

I run duals because i multitask between notepad, outlook express and winamp

You bring up a good point. Everyone claims to hate trolls, yet they do bring a certain flavor to the boards. I am guilty of enjoying a good flame war now and then. And I'm guilty of starting the "Intel's Dirty Tricks" thread, though I think it was a valid subject for people to discuss. I just worded the title a little provocatively, I guess. I try not to be a troll, but I suppose I crossed into troll territory a bit.

Anyway, I think trolls, or at least troll-like posts, are here to stay. People are going to have differing opinions about everything, and some people are going to go a little overboard in expressing their opinion. I think the line is crossed when you start getting too personal with insults. Insulting Intel or AMD is fair, but bringing up someone's mother for example would be going too far. Some guy named Tonestar was the worst example of that that I know of, if anyone remembers him. He got himself banned pretty quickly.

I guess the bottom line is that the forum kind of polices itself. The most egregious offenders either get banned or run out of town eventually or become an accepted, if annoying, presence (i.e. AMDMeltdown).
