When I download updates, are you suppose to open them or
save them? I would like to know which way is the best way
to be protected against what is out there and to make my
computer perform properly. I am a greenhorn as you can
tell. Need help!!!

Save them, then use a virus scanner to scan the downloaded files. You
may want to create a separate folder for to save the files to find
them easier afterwards.
