Its now taking Win XP 5 hours to defrag to about 40% and it just sits there. No other applications are open. Any ideas?

What processor? What type and how much ram? Did it always take that long? How old/ what type of H/D. Check for bad sectors on H/D. Does H/D make noise-like gravely? Run full anti-virus scan/adware removal scans. How is rest of performance? Has this changed since it was built?

Run a scandisk on ur hardrive, that might be it, also run spybot and adware and make sure you don't have any spyware running secretly, there are programs/processes that can run without the XP taskbar showing them. So def. do those two things and it mgiht help a lot, there is a slight chance also ur hd is nearing failure, but run scandisk and that should solve the problem. Good luck

And lastly, make sure you're not trying to defrag a hard drive with only 4 or 5% free space. That's a sure recipe for a slow defrag!
