Newbie here so everyone exscuse me for any dumb questions. How do I remove
programs that startup when I first log on to windowsxp? I appreciate your
time...also got this OEM version of Winxp with my new PC. would I be able to
buy an OEM version of Winxp Pro and install it? or do I hafta have a non OEM
version to use an upgrade...I guess Im sorta thinking it would be upgrading
an upgrade, but I would like to be able to find something where my wife can
use Excel (that is what she uses at work) Anyway I appreciate your time

There are various utilities to list and remove startup
programs, but I like this one for its power and
simplicity:
Startup Control Panel

Don't get to carried away removing programs, some are
needed. Check any programs you don't recognise against a
list such as this:
http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php

You have to do a clean install with OEM versions, you
can't use it to upgrade. You also have to buy it as the
same time as buying some hardware. Bear in mind that for
home use there may not be much benefit to using XP Pro
over XP Home.

Excel must be purchased separately or as part of a
Microsoft Office suite.

Use individual program 'preferences/options' to remove items from start-up..
that way, you will know what has been removed, and will not inadvertently
remove a/v and firewall functions..

XP Pro is an operating system, and does NOT include any of the applications
that you would find in MS OFFICE.. the difference between Pro and Home comes
down to security, e.g file encryption, and increased networking abilities..
unless your are about to set up a domain, or you need to encrypt files to
hide the contents from prying, competitive eyes, stick with what you have
got already and go buy MS Office to keep your wife happy.. :)

Upgrades work if you have a previous version, MS Word or Office 97 for
instance.. OEM will work if you can find one.. student version will too but
you need to be a student.. that's a moral thing..
