AOL MESSED UP INTERNET< PLZ HELP!

Hi im having alot of problems with AOL, my friend installed it onto his machine and it wouldnt let him do anything, so in order for my mate to use the inernet, i have had to re-formatt his HDD and re-install windows! i have done all this, i installed the modem, the computer see's the modem, says its working fine, but i cannot get a dial up connection going yet, it says there is no dial tone, i've messed about with the modem, changed settings and everything to no avail. Can anyone please help because this is driving me mad! p.s this O/S is XP PRO

A few thoughts...

Have you tested the phone line that is going into the modem (by putting a phone onto it and listening for a dial tone)?

Are you sure it's plugged into the correct jack (line, not phone)?

Have you tried running hyperterminal and typing commands to the modem (ATDT<ENTER>) and see if there is a dial tone?

Yes i have tried the phone line, it works fine, the cable is in the right jack, (line), and there is a dial tone using a normal phone
