I think game designers some times go way over the top with how detailed and intricate the game play is.
I haven’t played any RTS’s for a while so I cant really describe all the thins I mean but when the majority of your time is spend trying to set up a perfectly balanced economy with a heap of different resources to collect, City Boundaries, Alliances, Trade, ect. And then its all over because your opponent had a build that manages to over power you because his units where the perfect counter to yours.
It some times just seems to much. I like AOE2 but if you start to ad more things to worry about it just takes away from the fun.
Look at Warcraft & Starcraft, they are extremely popular and fun games probably because its more focused on using your units in battle then the a really intricate economy.
It seems as thou every time a new RTS comes out they have all the features of the other RTS’s on the market with a bunch of new ones. And ofter a couple of generations of RTS’s we end up with a game that sucks.
