My new HP computer with XP doesn't come with a disk containing the operating
system. Instead I can make "recovery CD's/DVD's." Anyone have any idea how
many CD's it takes to do this??

Thanks.

Chet

Chet;
Check your manual and/or contact HP for reliable information on the
specifics of your model.
That is an HP deal and has nothing to do with Windows.

But be sure to make them, you WILL eventually need them.

Thanks to both of you. I suspected it might be related to HP as well as
Windows but was hoping to get some ballpark idea. I'll anticipate somewhere
in the neighborhood of six.

I suspect doing this transfers info from the protected partition on the hard
drive that contains all the out-of-box info. Any programs I've installed
over the last several days will have nothing to do with this. It is a
backup of the factory supplied stuff (OS, etc.) that should allow me to
return the computer to the status that existed when it was brand new.
Correct?

Thanks

Chet

I see, since you are anticipating that means you didn't RTM (Read the
Manual) because why? It would have exact information whether the
manual be paper or electronic - you might also note, just because one
poster said his/her Compaq took six, the actual size is dependent on
what software options were installed on the PC - I've know people
where its take upwards to 15-18 standard CD-R/CD-RW's because of the
software they received with the PC. So that's why RTM - it'll tell
you how many you need for each software application installed, then
add them together and poof - your magic number you are looking for -
oh I forgot, that's too much like work :-(

Star Fleet Admiral Q,

You see, sir, it didn't come with a manual. The electronic manual at HP
only says the number varies with each model.

Since these will be read-only... Eight DVD-Rs or a small package stack of
25 CDRs should cover it. Don't use the cheap stuff. Package of 50 CDRs is
more economical. I usually have this many available in my desk. Stock up,
then do it.
