Today, I went to my town dump, affectionately known around here as the transfer
station. Someone had transferred a 5-year-old MicroTek USB/SCSI scanner to the
area known as "take it, or leave it". Well, I took it, found a compatible power
supply for it in my pile, downloaded the MicroTek ScanMaker software (basic scan
program and OCR plug-in), installed the software and immediately began scanning
away. The latest ScanMaker 5.93 supports a whole laundry list of MicroTek
scanners, which is the right way to do it. The downloadable software was easy
to find on the MicroTek web site. How well will a scanner picked from the town
dump? How long will it last? I don't know, but I'm willing to find out.

It seems like MicroTek does it right with its scanner software, providing easy
to install software with updates to support the latest Windows releases. Now,
why can't HP do it? ... Ben Myers
