Hi everyone,

I am looking to retire my Kyocera 2235 after more than two years of
service. I am taking the phone apart and adjusting the display almost
everyday. Thanks to the person who posted the information about that,
btw, it bought me a good 6 months. The phone still works great and I
love it despite it's display flaws, but it is really a hassle now. I
am going to try one last attempt with superglue, but if that doesn't
work I believe it's time to move on.

I am looking to get a new phone without renewing my contract (AC
330/3000 n/w starting 8pm, $35), so I prefer not to use the new every
two option. I may consider renewing for 1 year, if they keep all my
plan options the same and give me some kind of phone discount. I do
want to try to get the Express Network or National Access added where
I can use my phone as a modem for my computer and use only plan
minutes. Are they setting this up freely now? From what I've read on
forums, it seems pretty standard nowadays, but I may be
misinterpreting what I read. I'm not really a techie, so I just
wanted to get some feedback.

I'm a basic phone user, I live in the bay area, I don't go to the
mountains often. I travel mainly to hawaii and metropolitan areas, in
fact my 2235 is set to only digital network because the switching
between analog and digital was killing my battery. I want it to be
compatible with the Express Network feature, if I can get it added to
my account, and work at a decent speed. I like non-flip phones, don't
need a picture phone, I love my 2235 blue screen, I don't need a color
screen, but it would be nice. I really like the look of the Sanyo
6400 phones, but that's only available on sprint, as far i know. Do
you all have any suggestions? I see a lot about the

My budget is something along the lines of $200, is that reasonable?
I'm also debating whether to buy directly from verizon or going
through a third party website. Any thoughts?

I guess I'm just looking for overall guidance and a solid phone
recommendation. I would really appreciate the help. Last time I
bought my phone, I had a friend to explain everything to me, but he's
since moved to Germany. =(

Have you considered buying a phone off e-bay? You could save a significant
amount of money that way.

I bought an LG on e-bay and spent under $200 for a brand new, never used
phone. You can change phones online at the Verizon website with no problem
at all.

I'll confirm that as well. I bought a Motorola v120e on eBay about a
year ago. Never used, worked fine, and for around $160.

Still have it, but recently upgraded to a v60s.

I bought a Kyo 2325 prepaid for $70 at circuit city with $40 rebate a few
months ago bringing my total cost on a new phone to $30. I then activated
it as my primary verizon line via their website 'activate phone feature' and
did a *228 to get the correct non-prepaid PRL.

Worked great. I also bought a Sony Ericsson T61c at radio shack for $20
with no contract for a family member recently. These deals are kind of hard
to come by but do exist from time to time.

Verizon doesn't offer a upgrade with a one year term - any upgrade
with a discount requires a two year contract.

As other people have said, eBay is your best bet.

Just an aside, a friend of mine sells electronic stuff and saw cellphones in
his catalog (Brand new, full warranty, even though he is a Verizon dealer,
he can get em cheaper from a distributor than Verizon itself!). Don't just
limit yourself to EBay, He orders em for me at $20 over wholesale and I just
change the ESN online. I looked at some of the phones/costs at Verizon, and
even with the $100 off after two years, it was cheaper to buy a new one
wholesale (and a lot more variety).

Not so.

You can upgrade your phone at a one year promotional price however you
must take a plan and promotion that is available at the time of the
upgrade.

I verified this with two phone calls to CS after a visit to a Verizon
store.

BTW you can upgrade secondary phones on a family share plan without
changing the plan. Upgrading the primary phone would require you to
change to a current plan and promotion.

Depends on the market. In the South, you can do 1 or 2 year upgrades and do
not have to change plans.

Just (last week) upgraded my daughter's phone at the promo price.
1 year contract extension. 2 years would have got an additional
mail-in rebate. Because her phone is a secondary line on a family
plan it doesn't qualify for new-any-two.

And the VZW stores I've been all list one-year subsidized phone prices
in addition to two-year prices.

Thanks everyone, for your thoughts and feedback! I really appreciate
it.

I'm still looking for a phone, I think I'm going to buy one tomorrow
because I am now desperate. My display is almost totally dead.

I talked to Vz CS today. I can get a discount if I get a 1 yr
contract, and it will be the 2 yr. contract price + $50, which I guess
is o.k. No luck with the National Access though, which was a bummer.
Maybe I should try again with another CSR, or is this pretty much not
being added anymore?

At first, I wanted to go the route that Dan suggested and wait out for
a deal where I can get a decent phone, inexpensively and without a
contract. But I guess the situation has changed, and my mother (on my
own, and yet, still governed by the parents) almost insists that I get
a phone with a camara. Secretly, though, I do think I want one, shh,
don't tell.

So I've come up with 2 ideas...

For the picture phone, I guess the lg vx6000 is the best one. If what
the verizon CSR said is true, and I can get the phone for what's on
the website + $50, I'll get that one with a 1 yr agreement.

If it turns out that I have to pay something on the order of 300
bucks, I'll probably get the Kyocera KX414 phone if it's cheaper. Is
this National Access compatible?

Any additional thoughts would be welcomed!

Update:

I was so impatient, I ended buying the LG 6000 at radioshack for
129.99 with a $20 rebate. ;D Of course the accessories were killer
at like $60! 1 yr extension.

So far so good, except... I still don't really like flip phones. But
after speaking with my mother, I realized non-camara phones were
apparently not an option. =P

One thing I noticed about the LG6000 though is that the contacts
options are rather limiting. For my old Kyocera, I could program as
many of each type of number as I want (i.e. more than 2 home numbers,
etc.) I could also save snailmail addresses (as many as I wanted).
The LG-6000 also has a limit of how many characters you can put in a
text memo, weird, huh? So now, as I program in my contacts, I'm
finding it hard to figure out where to store all that old
information/addresses that I had in my Kyocera. One hack I found
though, is that the URL field is unlimited, so I have been putting
most of my addresses there.

Also, it's harder to get to the specific number that I want for a
person, for example so-and-so's cell phone instead of home phone. I
guess I'm just used to the old kyocera way. LOL. I must say though,
the look is rather cool. And it's nice to be able to actually see
who's calling me. ;D

Kyocera's address book is the best of any phone I've ever used. The address
book on my next phone will have a high standard to meet <g>

You may be surprised to learn that the LG models are amongst the
*least* limiting for the contacts!

All the phones do that. They don't have unlimited memory! In general
they use a fixed record size for each phone book entry internally.
Your other phones would have had a limit - you just may not have hit
it. You can use the memo field for the address if you want.

> One hack I found
> though, is that the URL field is unlimited, so I have been putting

Nope, it is limited to 48 characters as well. You can see the limits
at the bottom of http://bitpim.sourceforge.net/test [...] -notes.htm
(The VX4400 and VX6000 phonebooks are identical).

> Also, it's harder to get to the specific number that I want for a

You browse to the phonebook entry and look at the icons for each
number. The numbers are in the order you specify so you can
easily set the default/first number for an entry.

You're right, the URL field is not unlimited! I just haven't hit it
yet. But I can never fit a full address into the Memo field with only
32 characters. I don't even put the state of the person's address,
just the street name, apt city and zip. Thankfully the URL is longer,
and I don't know that many people with URLs.

I don't know about other Kyocera's, but I just put a 100 character
(0-9, ten times) memo for a test contact and it was saved! Kyocer
2235... I'm really gonna miss that phone! Going through all my
contacts, I've realized how much of my life is in there! I found
confirmation numbers from like 1 year back saved as a contact with
notes! Hah. I guess I could do that with the LG as well. Just gotta
have shorter memos ;D

I'm learning my way to navigate through the LG. Slowly but surely.
At least I can take pictures of gas stations which display ARM and LEG
as prices for Unleaded Plus and Premium now.
