For those of you not aware yet - there is a particularly nasty worm loose in the net - The Sasser Worm does not require you to open any attachments or emails - just be connected to the net ... as you are now.
See this excellent <A HREF="http://www.updatexp.com/sasser-worm.html" target="_new">article and help site</A>.
If you have not done so - go to the M$ Update site and patch your copy of Windows!

Guess what, you may be. 151-170 Financial Institutions (depending on which news report you see) in Finland have closed becouse of it, I think to avoid it. I am sure they have firewalls too. The nasty part of this one is you don't need to open any email to get it, just being attached to the network will do it. Like going online or going into THG. Just going online I am open to it, but I have nothing on this computer that isn't backed up. Update your antivirus and good luck.
sorry pal, this worm works just like the others have, it exploits a bug in component ms screwed up. it randomly attacks ip addresses. it cant even determin if my machine isnt patched. yes, i am safe. only way for these kinds of things is if people leave ports open, go to a website where some kind of java or flash virus is active. other than that you have to run somthing.

now featuring valve security module!
This just confirms how many users couldn't be bothere to update their computers on a regular basis.
I know M$ OSs are full of security holes, I have a hardware firewall, NAV2004, Ad-Aware, etc, and I update all on a regular basis, and install ALL security patches, and guess what? I've NEVER had a virus or worm!!!
When big corporations are suffering from blaster style worm attacks, its time they got a new IT department, because most of them can be avoided with a few minor precautions.
Just my 2 cents

Unfortunatly, most people don't know how or don't care or couldn't be bothered to take the 5 minutes a week to update their OS, AVV program, whatever. They figure "Hey, its installed, I'm safe, right?"

yeah if users kept the updates installed (for windows xp/2000/whatever) then this virus wouldnt have affected/or is affecting as many people. the patch came out before the worm and the writer of the worm exploited the patch as a guideline to see where the loopholes were, unfortunate for those who didnt install the patch.
Even with everything fully updated you are never 100% safe.
There is always a delay between the release of a new virus and the updating of the virus defintions.
I downloaded a file that infected my computer, Zone Alarm spotted the process trying to connect to the internet. But Norton 2004, Avast and two online virus scanners failed to detect it.
I kept updating my AV and rescanning. It took two days before the AV programs started detecting it.
No, nothing and no system, unless it has absolutly no internet/network connection, as well as no floppy drives, CRDOM drives, or USB Flash drives is completly safe.
But, "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure"
If the proper precautions were taken, most worms would not become the problem they are. Generally speaking, people are stupid and, for example, don't know enough to not open an attachment.
