More Information

Hi everyone,

My computer is seriously freaking me out, if i try to install any game, the computer freezes. My system is not stable at the moment, but it runs for a couple of hours before freezing up. When i start up my system i have to reboot a couple of times because it gets stuck at different points sometimes in the bios system check, sometimes in the windows loading screen. Anyway I am having trouble installing games.

The thing is that even if my system is unstable, i'm able to play already installed games fine and i can also surf to web and for at least a couple of hours without freeze up. But if i try to install a game it just freezes at any random point in the install.

Any ideas?

I'm thinking that the motherboard is screwed, it's GA-8PE667 (845PE chipset) I'm running DDR400 in it at 266Mhz even though the max spec is DDR333. I'm running a celeron 1.8 Ghz in it at a fsb of 100Mhz (x18 multiplier) one of my HDDs recently failed ie i have to recover the data with seagate's data recovery program. I initially thought that this was just a faulty HDD but strangely enough i do get the occasional windows system file corruption on a different (older) HDD that i'm running now, this HDD had never given me problems b4 so i suspect the porblem is else where. Occasionally the system files get corrupted, an i have to use the recovery console from my WinXP cd to fix them. This means having to install service packs again and stuff, except that it freezes during installation of the service pack!!!

I have a AGP8x card running in the older slot but i don't think that should be the problem, i tried replacing it with an older 4x card and it didn't fix the problem. My graphics card is a x850xt and it required a extra power connector. Not sure if power is a problem. I have a thermaltake 430W power supply (came with the case).

The question is what is causing the problems? is it my motherboard, my power supply or what?
