This could have been put in the "components"
section, but will try it here first. You
guys know a thing or two about computers,
also, right?
This is what is happening. It`s a P55T2P4,
P-133 with Win98SE and a Ati match 64 pci
4 meg vid card. I used the thing at home
with an old 14" vga-svga monitor with 256
colors. Then I moved it to my brothers in
another city, and set it up with a
different 14" monitor. All else is the
same, nothing excentric.
The problem is this:
The monitor only accepts 16 colors. When
I try 256 colors, the window becomes
doubled(actually quadrupled, I beleive)
and when I use the "horizontal" ajustment
to bring the pictures in synch, then the
screen turns to "snow"(static like).
This is what I have tried:
Verified "devives" in Windows = ok. Put
the 3D acceleration bar to lowest setting.
Tried all combinations of cheking boxes
for monitor settings. Removed both vid
card and monitor in devices and had Win98
autodetect. Have put in manually different
monitor types (vga, svga, 75 refresh, etc).
Reinstalled vid drivers. Tried Windows
drivers. Tried vid card in different pci
slot. Have also tried a different 14"
monitor = same result. Have tried
with a 486 & 1meg vesa vid card and voilà:
256 colors. So the monitor can display the
256 colors!
Next thing I want to try is switching out
the vid card for a
different one.
Now , you tell me what ELSE it might be!
Thanks
Little Pikey

It sounds like you have the problem well in hand. I’m just surprised that you could not get it to work by lowering the refresh rate. Let us know if the new vid card works.
Sorry, have'nt come in lately. Yes, Asus 430 HX. Really surprised this happened with 2 different monitors.
Does'nt seem to be to many options for changing refresh rates with this Ati Mach 64 card. Will look more closely. Perhaps some "tweaks" in the registry for refresh rates?

No, I really don't have the problem well in hand. Shooting in the dark pretty much. The sys is my brother's in another city. Will only get to it in a week or so, but would like to have a good arsenal of things to try once I do get there. Will post when resolved the issue.

Really! I didn`t think the PCI bus would permit the level of bandwich that that new card will demand! It would be best for me to then get ride of my isa modem card and then set PCI latency to lower wait state, right? Would that help a bit?
