Processes in Task Manager

I'm trying to clear out some unnecessary processes to free up mem usage, but i'm not sure what each one does. For example, why are there 4 svchost.exe running? 2 from system, one for network service, and one local. If someone could answer this for me or point me to a url that has info I would appreciate it.
