I have a Sony Vaio subnote with wireless LAN card. It runs XP home
edition. No firewall when traveling. Popup blocker disabled. Preferred
browser is Netscape 7.1

Normally, I connect to the internet though a USB connection to an old
telephone line hookup through another PC server, located in my home
office. I am also configured for dial-in to Earthlink and can easily do
broadband off my ethernet connection when I travel. I was recently in a
hotel with free wireless and though my wireless card was reporting that
I had an excellent connection, I could not bring the network up in
either IE or Netscape, a problem I encountered the only other time I
tried to use wireless. And when I did a bit of a IP search through a
ipconfig/restore no IP address came up for the card. This suggests to me
that I am not configured properly for a wireless connection. It's about
at this point my inexperience with XP and network settings kick in. I'm
much more comfy with Win98SE.

Can someone point me in the direction of advice on how I configure and
use my subnote to for wireless connectivity in addition to my home
network and dialin????? There's probably something very simple I can do
but I cannot find it in my computer's help. Since the subnote came with
the card and XP installed I assumed all would be ok. If it appears that
the forthcoming service pack will solve this problem I am happy to wait
for that. Thanks much for helping with what is probably a very common
problem.

Check to see if you have a fixed IP address or a IP address provided by
DHCP. The hotel provides IP address by DHCP. To check go to network then
right click on your wireless icon the high light TCP/IP then click
properties.
