If i have a motherboard with an AGP x8 slot can i use a x4 Graphics card in it?
is it backward compatable?
i dont seem to be able to find any graphics cards that support x8 so i am wondering if the AGP x8 is backward compatable with x4

yes. you can use a 4x AGP graphics card in a 8x AGP motherboard. ATI 9700 Pro is an example of a graphics card with 8x AGP.

if u cant afford a radeon 9700pro u can get the geforce4mx with agp 8x, or the ti4200 with 8x, but current games won't benefit from this, so stick to an ago 4x card, the 8x ismostly a marketing trick to make teh cards look twice as fast, while in reality, current games wont benefit from this at all.

AGP8x and AGP4x are cross compatable. And these guys are right, at this point AGP8x is nothing more than a marketing gimick.
