I'm a longtime lurker, first time builder. I want to build my own PC and would like opinions/suggestions/reassurance on what I have selected.

Purpose: General applications, some gaming, molecule fragmentation modeling (home built code), scientific data analysis

AMD ATHLON XP 2100+/266 FSB PROCESSOR CPU - RETAIL BOX

ASUS A7V8X 100Mb/s LAN, Firewire IEEE1394, Serial ATA w/ RAID DDR400 AMD Athlon/Athlon XP/Duron Socket A, Processor Mother Board

KINGSTON KVR333X64C25/512 512MB 32x64 PC2700 DDR RAM

ATI OEM RADEON 9000 Atlantis PRO 64mb DDR DVI/CRT/TV out,BULK

I plan on buying the above from Newegg.

The case I'm going to buy from a shop in town. (I asked them so many questions I feel abliged to buy something)

I have a 80 Gig Western Digital drive, CD-ROM, crappy monitor etc that I can use.

I like the MB because I can upgrade the AMD chip later on, and the good review from Tomshardware. Also would like a firewire port.

Thanks for you time.

Check newegg's refurbished section wed afternoon for great deals. They usually get a fresh batch of stuff in that day. I would check out the ati oem section for the 9000 or 8500LE. The 8500 is a little faster, but the 9000 is ok too.
