After getting killed by Spider Zombie boss in Doom 3 for the 76th time over 2 or 3 days I decided to give it a rest for a while. $%^&* that spider.
So on a whim I order Far Cry online and it arrived yesterday.
I installed it this morning and I have to say - pretty awesome. Since it's years old I was scared the gameplay and graphics might have aged by now. Not so.
With every setting maxed out and 1680x1050 enabled the game looks damn good and runs smooth as glass. When I tried the demo on my old PC the firefights were a slideshow at medium settings/1024x768. I almost consider it a blessing now that I waited until I had a PC that could crank it up. And the game play is a blast as well (at least what I've gotten through - about 1/2 hour).
I can tell I'm really going to like this game. If anyone hasn't played it because it's not new you probably don't need to worry about that.
I never played Doom 3, but people always say Half-Life 2 is the greatest FPS of that time period, but I liked Far Cry better and thought it was superior in almost every way. I appreciate Half-Life 2 for its story, presentation, characters, and physics, but it was pretty much just a rail shooter and the loading pauses every few minutes took away from the immersion. It's satisfying crawling through the jungle, zooming in on a mercenary camp with your sniper rifle and picking everyone off from 200 yards and then jumping in a car turret to take down a chopper.
It's for US only (free + ads), it seems to have been taken down, because I tried to download it and the page said Ubi.com was working on a way to block IPs.
yeah, HL/HL2 is just like the train rides except you get guns. farcry is pretty immersive, I love the hand gliding (I think I found only 3 of those)
I applied the 1.4 patch and it improves the textures quite a bit. Let me say (err..type) it again:
Great gaming experience. Some of the basic movement through indoor environments sort of harkens back to an earlier graphical era, but the firefights are a hell of a lot of fun. And I love the expansive, colorful, bright outdoor areas.
It's just the open expansive areas turn soon enough to corridors and darkness. Then these monsters arrive and I've never been bothered to play past that moment despite one or two replays of the game. It just gets boring.
