s/pdif on the asus p4s8x

i bought an asus p4s8x and while reading the users manual i came across soming called a s/pdif it said it supports one but does not come with one can someone please tell me what one is and how it can be useful to me

Sony/Phillips differential audio connection, usually a optical connection. it has two different types of connectors. one is a black square connector with a dummy plug in it to prevent dirt and debris from entering into it untill use and the other is a gold plated RCA connector.


Very high end audio equipment has SPDIFF conectors, this is the highest quality connection available.
