Wireless interference

I have a dlink DI-624 g type router - wep enabled, and matching pci and
cardbus antennas on several machines. The router is 25 feet away from the
farthest machine (I live in a 900 sf apartment) and yet the transmission
rates reported by the card utilities rarely exceeds 20 mbs. It sits mostly
at 6-11 or so and disconnects frequently.

Here are my guesses for interference:

One of my neighbors is using a 2.4 ghz cordless.

My 900mhz cordless is bleeding signal.

The logitech bluetooth connection point is interfering.

Questions

1. Will changing channel on the router (from 6 to 7) help?

2. There is a channel selector in the dlink web utility, but it only allows
'6'. How does one change channels on these units?

3. Will the add-on 4db or omnidirectional 5db gain antennas help?

I have a Microsoft bluetooth mouse on my system, and I wonder if it could be
causing my similar problem.

Does anyone know if there is a way to configure the bluetooth device to use
a specific channel? If I could set the mouse to use channel 1 and the wifi
to use channel 6, then I could eliminate the interference (in theory).

My 900mhz cordless is bleeding signal. This should not be interfering cause
you ruter is 2.4 ghz. I don't think your neighbors phone should be giving
you any problem unless your house is seperated by a really thin wall.

This may be intefering have you disabled it to see if the problem persists.

1. Will changing channel on the router (from 6 to 7) help?

It may help you out. If you have encryption try disabling it temporarily to
see if that speeds up your wireless connection. Encryption tends to slow
down the connection a bit. If you see no imporvement then try changing the
channel then try changing the channel and re-enable the encryption

Changing the channel may help you out. You should be able to change the
channel by selecting the drop down. When you open the routers main page to
go the wireless tab and you should then see the channel listed there they
should be from 1-11. If you don't see 1-11 you probably need to update the
firmware version for your router make sure you pick the correct model and
version type.

3. Will the add-on 4db or omnidirectional 5db gain antennas help?

I really dont think this is going to solve your problem. If all else fails
you can always try this. But I don't think it will do you any good.

Thanks for the replies.

Well how does one change the channel on the DI-624 router and will it matter
if the bluetooth device is constantly flipping itself?

The dlink config shows a dropdown for channel, but it only contain '6'.
Autoselect is greyed out and "open system authentication" is checked.

If you're saying that you're not getting link datarates better than 20 (as
oppposed to throughput) then there is a problem. If it's throughput you're
talking about, you're doing fine. You say you get frequent disconnects, so I
assume you're talking link datarate.

Not very likely, but possible.

Very unlikely.

There will certainly be some interference. You don't say what the device is,
but if it's a mouse or a keyboard, it shouldn't be noticeable.

You forgot to include the possibility that a neighbor has an 802.11 net.

If your problem is interference, changing channel is the first thing you
should try. I'd look at the site survey of any of the clients to see if
other networks show up. If they do, the associated channel should be listed.
Try to select a center channel that differs from the others by at least 5.
If a neighbor has a net on channel 6, use 1 or 11. If a neighbor has a net
on channel 3, use 8 or 9. Your choices in the US are limited to 1 - 11. If
you don't find any listed nets, start trying channels in order.

Sounds like you have the 108 Mbps "SuperG" mode enabled. That locks the
channel choice at 6, and also uses pretty much the entire 2.4 Ghz spectrum -
which maximizes the likelihood that you and your neighbors will interfere
with each other. Disable SuperG and see if things get better. You'll have to
disable it anyway to change channel centers.

>
> 3. Will the add-on 4db or omnidirectional 5db gain antennas help?

Maybe. I'll let someone who knows antennas address that. First, you need to
determine if your problem is interference, construction materials (even with
a 900 SF place, if there's a lot of metal around, it might be a problem), or
something else.

You have super G with turbo (either static or dynamic) enabled. Using this
setting, the router uses ALL channels and defaults to 6. Turning off the
turbo mode will allow you to change channels. I had the same problem and
found the information on the Dlink website. Check out this web site and read
everything there as they have info regarding placement of the router and
other issues regarding wireless performance.

Log in to the router, click the advanced tab on top, then click the
performance tab on the left. Scroll to the super G mode and change this to
super G without turbo. You should then be able to change channels.

Also I use a 2.4ghz phone and have no problem with interference. I have the
Dlink DI624 and use super G with dynamic turbo and this setup seems to work
fine.

Setting the channel is not possible for Bluethooth.
It uses the so called frequency hopping and will change its frequency up to
1600 times per second. Which makes it pretty hard to sniff any packet.

Thank you TW. Switching off turbo allowed channel 7 to work. Once I
switched, the problem disappeared. : - )

I am happy my information helped, but play with your setup including moving
the router to different locations because enabling the super G with turbo
(either dynamic or static) will definitely increase your wireless
performance. Also check the Dlink website for more info on your DI624. Read
everything there.
