xp install stuck in a loop

Installing XP Professional (OEM Disc with SP1)all seems
to be well, until 13 mins to go during the registering
components phase (about50/60% through this bit) when
system hangs. Have waited patiently on three occasions,
once for nearly an hour. but install justs stalls at this
point. Complete lock out of keyboard. powerdown machine
and power up setup picks up at 39 mins remaining
and "installs windows" then it hangs again at 13 mins.
forcing start from cd rom gives choices. install windows
goes direct to where setup was last. Repair results in a
dos type prompt but no clues as to what to do next and
startup from startup disc doesnt work as we haven't got
to create a start up disc yet! Is this because windows
refers to a logfile when starting or is it because of
something else. is there a way of reinstating 98 and
starting again or is it a case of force a dos command
promt and format the disc and start all over?

Can anybody advise me?

You might also try booting with a DOS-bootable floppy (you can get disk
images at http://www.bootdisk.com/), format the partition on the hard
drive, and make sure you can copy all files ("xcopy /s") from the CD
into a test directory on the hard drive to ensure ALL of the CD is
readable.

Might be due to a driver that got loaded that was included in Windows
but not working. Remove all cards from the expansion slots but leave
the video card (be sure to use anti-static procedures). You probably
don't need to remove the hard drives if you have more than one but you
should check that they are jumpered correctly regarding master/slave or
cable select. Then boot using the Windows install CD, reformat the
partition (since the OEM version won't do an upgrade) but make sure you
have first backed up any data you can get off the hard drive, and do a
fresh install with the minimal hardware in place. Once that install
works okay, then try adding the other hardware one at a time (and be
sure to use the Windows XP compatible drivers for each but get them from
the device maker's web site, like for the motherboard, video, audio,
modem, etc.).

You never mention what hardware you have (motherboard, CPU, memory,
video card, and other devices) so no one experienced on that hardware
can give you focused help.

Thanks I will give that a go. The Machines full details
are unknown as it is not mine I have just been drafted in
to help a pal after he got in to trouble.
