I was running a benchmark using 3D Mark 2001 SE and it said my external clock speed is 133 Mhz. When I compare my score to others, that have similar scores, I see that their front side bus speeds are higher. Usualy set at around 144 Mhz. Does this mean that they are over-clocking or is that a factory setting? Is 133 Mhz fsb the highest speed that this board supports? Is there a way to change this setting without overclocking? I am running a XP 2200+ and I thought it is supposed to run at 233 Mhz fsb. Any help is appreciate!

Yes, 133 MHz. is the correct front side bus setting for your board and processor. It is a DDR bus though, so in effect it transfers data at an equivalent of 266 MHz. And Yes, many people overclock that and push the FSB to get more performance... and that's overclocking.

But you need to distinguish this FSB speed from your memory bus. Your board also supports 166 MHz. DDR or an equivalent of 333 MHz. on the memory bus... but only if you have PC2700 or higher DDR memory.

Correction, the A7V333 can support a FSB up to 230MHz but 166 is the highest FSB that can be used without having the PCI and AGP clocks out of specs. I'm currently running a lowly Duron Morgan AHHAA @ 166MHz x 7 = 1166MHz ( stock speed is 100MHz x 100 = 1000MHz ) and it's fully stable @ 1.9V, Core temp is only 52C under full load ( air cooled with a full cooper HSF )

The A7V333 supports AMD 166MHz FSB Thoroughbreds and Bartons with the appropriate BIOS version.

Funniest thing is that I attained a 166MHz FSB by running 128Mb of second hand Samsung PC2100 that was given to me. Unfortunately, it will only boot @ 2.5/3/3/6 even when overvolted. I'll get some real PC2700 memory after I buy a new 19 inch CRT, i'm now using an obselete 13 inch I had back in my 386 days, I'll be taking CAD lessons in a few months, no need to tell you that getting a better CRT is top priority =)

Thanks for the info gentlemen! I am running pc2700 memory. I don't want to over-clock because...I don't know what I'm doing LOL!. Should I leave the speed at 133 Mhz? How do I change it to 166 Mhz and still keep factory specs?

System Specs:

Asus A7V33
Athlon XP 2200+ (Aluminum Dragon Orb)
1 gig pc2700
Enermax 431w power supply

Thanks Again!

You change the speed in the BIOS, should be under something like "BUS Frequencies". For your processor 133 is the correct setting.

I suggest you read about unlocking, you could run that AXP 2200+ in sync with your memory, giving you access to higher bandwidth. Unlocking usually involve connecting small metal contacts on the CPU that may or may not be separated by a laser etched pit. It's not really considered overclocking if your FSB x Multiplier = stock speed.

Take my CPU as an example, I can run it at factory default of 100MHz x 10 I can also run it at 133MHz x 7.5 or 166MHz x 6 . 200MHz x 5 is even possible if someone is using PC3200 and a 400MHz DDR chipset like the Nforce2 or KT400.

FSB x Multi = CPU speed

100 x 10 = 1000
133 x 7.5 = 1000
166 x 6 = 1000
200 x 5 = 1000
