Yesterday's Financial Times had an interesting article on a plan to
compile a listing of all domestic cell phone numbers. Apparently this
directory is expected to be available "early next year". The
following paragraph gave me a bit of start:

"In Congress, legislation has already been introduced that would
prohibit wirelss companies from listing numbers without customer
permission, or for charging customers to keep unlisted numbers. All
the big US wireless carriers except Verizon plan to give users the
option to be listed."

That last sentence is a little ambiguous. It could mean VZW is not
planning to cooperate with this directory project at all, and that
even those subscribers who might want to be listed won't be given that
option. But I have the feeling it means the opposite: they will
cooperate, and they won't give us the chance to opt out (unless
legally compelled to do so, which is unlikely to be the case soon
enough to matter).

I hope I'm wrong, because in general I've been happy with VZW service.
But there's no way I would continue my service if my number is listed
without my consent.

VZW has publicly stated (included in several of the articles on this topic)
that they oppose the directory listing project -- VZW states that if a
customer wants to be listed, their cellular number can be listed in the
local landline white pages by request.

Thanks for the clarification, and I'm glad to hear that the
interpretation I thought was less likely is actually the right one.

What?! I could never get them to list my cell phone number in the local
landline phone book! I complained about this and was told to get a listing I
would have to buy a remote call forwarding number for $16.00 / month, which
would be listed and the calls to it would be forwarded to my cell phone.

I paid for one, and then I discovered that they didn't list the number I
paid for specifically for that purpose because it didn't meet some deadline
even though they assured me that I had it in in time for the phone books to
be printed. The following year they used the very same excuse and I was
furious. After paying for it for well over a year I never got a listing and
I was pretty ticked. I had to cancel the stupid number and go through the
hassle of changing my information with all of my contacts all over again.
What a pain!
