I am currently in the market for a new AMD Motherboard, Processor and memory. I don't have a lot of money so I need a good value package. I am going into Communication Arts next semester so I need something I can do picture editing and possibly video editing as well. I also like playing BF 1942, Medal of Honor, and some of the newer 1st person shooter games so I would like to have something powerful enough to run them where they will look good but not the highest settings are needed. Some of the things I am thinking of getting are:

CPU:
AMD XP1800-2100: whats the best value for these..I will overclock some and is the retail worth the extra $

MB
MSI KT4 Ultra $105
Abit KD7 $92
(I like MSI, Abit, and maybe Epox)

RAM
I want 512mb but I don't know what speed I need?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!

Video/Image Editing programs, at least the ones that I'm familiar with, are greatly benefited by SSE2. Sadly, AMD processors do not provide SSE2 support yet. But Pentium4 northwood does.

In that spirit, my recommendation:

Albatron PX845PEV PRO motherboard $93
Intel Pentium4 1.8A processor $147
Two 256MB Samsung DDR333 SDRAM memory modules $81x2 = $162

All purchasable from NewEgg. Read newEgg's user reviews to see how the 1.8A is overclocking from 2.5GHz to 2.9GHz simply by increasing the FSB in the BIOS. Cheers!

Buy the Leaktek nForce2 board and 2 sticks of Kingston PC2700 CL2.5 DDR Ram. It will allow you to upgrade to the latest Athlon XP without considering performance. You will get full performance from a 333 FSB AXP's and coming "Barton" Core 400 FSB AXP's
