Hi, I'm new here, and for Christmas I'm going to get a new graphics card for my PC. It's been long over-due, the one I have is intergrated into my PC, an ATI Radeon Xpress 200. Needless to say, it's icky. Anyway, I talked to a guy at Staples on the phone, and for a guy on a budget like me, he said GeForce 8400 would be great for me. (I asked him if he had any 8600's in, he didn't.) Well, I've been looking at a game to get with it, and Hellgate: London looks good. I'm a total noob at graphics cards and such, so any advice or help would be great.
Here are my specs:
AMD Athlon(tm) 64 Processor 3000+
CPU Speed: 1.99 GHz Performance Rated at 3.00 GHz
RAM: 1.4 GB
Windows XP
all i can say is DO NOT be taken in by the dx10 is so good marketing crap out there, the 8400 does not have the horsepower to run dx10 (hell, the 8800's struggle), so just look at charts
Do you have a budget in mind?
If your budget is around $150-ish then getting an HD3850 would be best. If you have more then go for an HD3870 or an 8800GT (the 8800GT being the better but a bit more expensive card).
If you're not that much of a gamer, and don't really mind having a budget card, then get something along the lines of a 7600GT as someone has already mentioned.
The 8400 cards are not gaming cards, and won't really run games well at all.
I, personally, wouldn't buy electronics off of eBay... but that's just me.
I would have suggested a 7900GS or an X1950Pro if they weren't so close in price to an HD3850 which is MUCH better. A brand new HD3850 only costs about £100 (from ebuyer.com); only £20 more than the used (I presume) 7900GS you suggested off of eBay.
Also, I would expect the TC is going to play games other than HGL, no?
