My system is a Gigabyte 7vtxe (kt266a) with a 1700+, 512mb crucial ddr, audigy, geforce 3. my system is not liking the audigy drivers.. ive had many problems that i've blamed on via over the years and im ready to move on.

Granite bay is my answer? Or just get a SIS 745 for my athlon and get stability?

I just want something that will work with my audigy because I like it and the system always needs tweaking to be stable even without the audigy.
I dont like via but dont know if i can trust anyone but intel again because i dont want to waste my money.
but a sis 745 is cheap if they are any good.. not interested in nforces.

Well I went from a KT133A chipset to an Intel 845E chipset.
I must say i'm glad i did that since my audigy gave a lot of problems on the KT133A board. Now on my Intel 845E (okay CPU for such board is a bit more expensive) but now i can at least use my audigycard without any problems and crackling sound and so on. (and i don't need to do a driver update for the Via chipset every week anymore also. So my Opion is Yes it's worth it.

I will be doing the same then, I need either a 845e or granite bay chipset board. Hopefully granite bay will be available to buy soon.
As far as speed in concerned, I could care less anymore about speed.. I just want a stable computer that I can leave on and is going to work with everything.

i recently went from an eopx 8kha+ w/athlon 1700 xp to a gigabyte 8pe667 ultra w/2.4b p4 and i've never regreted it (except the case, i didn't choose right there, ah well!). i also switched from w98 to w2k at the same time. my new machine is very fast and stable and i spend alot of time on it. if you do do the switch make sure you get a mobo that supports hyper-threading which, in my opion, is going to be a big thing in the next year.
