Hi all, my old system had a 3500+ cpu, I have had a look online at getting something slightly better for it but these old chips can come at a premium when new. If anyone has an old socket 754 (dual core?) that is better than my 3500+ I would be interested in buying it. (Im knocking together a basic gaming system for my brother).
Cheers!

I have one somewhere at my parents house... i found that 754's are not cheap on ebay.

i'm not sure that there are any x2 socket 754's out there... i could be wrong though. If you're going to upgrade ram or anything else you may want to price out a complete new cpu/mobo/ram combo since mid range x2's are cheap and so is ddr2.

First dual core was 939. A new amd can be very cheap using an Athlon 64 X2 4400+ is worth $40 on the egg and can be had cheaper on ebay + an am2/am2+ and 2gigs of ddr2 can sum up to $100ish

Last I checked the 3500+ cpu is socket 939.

Socket 754 is the 2800+, 3000+, 3200+, 3400+, and the 3700+.

If your board had a 3500+ cpu installed, then it's definitely a socket 939 board, which is good news.

You should be able to upgrade to the Athlon 64 X2 4800+, if you can still find one.

What board do you have?

Hmm must be a 3400+ as its def skt 754. I upgraded a couple years back and ran into probs cos my old mobo was agp and I wanted pci-e. So I found a skt754 with pci-e mobo, twas a right pain in the @rse. I was hoping that there were some ealry dual cores on 754. Basically if anyone has a better performing chip than the 3400+ i'll go for it. I did consider new mobo etc but dont want to spend any $$ on it as I only upgraded my rig a few months back for £1200, Iv'e had enough of spending my cash! :)

Well then, as mentioned above, you're better off just starting from scratch then. Go with an AM2 board if you really want to stick with AMD. Or better yet for gaming (IMO of course), go with something like an Intel P35, P43, or P45 board and an E7400 wolfdale or similar.

I have a gigabyte P43, E7400, 8800GT 256 and it scores over 11,000 3DMark06. Not breaking any records, but not too shabby for a budget gamer.

I had an AM2 crosshair with a 5200+ and an 8800GT 512 that barely scored 7,000. I replaced the mobo with a gigabyte p35, and cpu with an E6750, and left everything else the same and it scored nearly 4,000 higher, which is a big impact on games, and proved to me that it doesn't always pay to save a few dollars.

Here is the only on that is faster than the 3400+ only difference is more Cache, hardly worth the premium price.http://cgi.ebay.com/AMD-Athlon-64-3700-2-4GHz-1M-L2-Socket-754-CPU-RARE_W0QQitemZ350185266545QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item350185266545&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A1234|66%3A2|65%3A12|39%3A1|240%3A1318|301%3A1|293%3A1|294%3A50
