I have been having this issue with every single DVD based game that I own. The DVD-ROM drive (ASUS DVD-E616A3T), will install and read most disks perfectly fine. In fact, I've never had a single problem if I want to listen to some music or install a game, but as soon as I try to launch a game that requires the DVD to be in the drive... I get that notorious "Please Insert the correct CD/DVD-ROM and restart the application" error. (Yes, the DVD is in the drive, I'm not a retard)
Originally I thought this was only a problem with COD4... but then it happened after I installed BF2142, GoW for the PC, C&C3, and the list goes on. For now I have been able to circumvent this problem by using a fixed executable. (Before anyone asks, no I am not pirating any of these games, nor am I using any emulation software such as Daemon Tools) This is as close to a fresh install of XP as you can get.
Has anyone else run into this issue / know a solution to get the drive working properly? So far I have updated firmware, reinstalled the device, and change the transfer mode, but none of the above has worked. (I've also read that this may have something do to with Windows XP installing the device as a hot-swappable drive, but nothing that gives me a solution to this.)
To fix this you need to insert the cd/dvd
Though I won't pretend to know why this is happening, don't you find it the least bit ironic that you bought the games and can't play, while a pirater would be able to circumvent that -- as you said the pirated EXE files work. If only the producers would realize that their anti-piracy schemes are always broken and in the end you just lock out paying customers, guaranteed to piss them off.

Yeah, it's ridiculous, I made a posted in another thread commenting on that same issue.

Thanks for your insight, Oh-great-one. The DVD is inside the drive, it just don't want to recognize it for some reason.
Yeah i was joking, i had the same problem with command and conquer 3, it keeps saying a file is unreadable, however if i rip the whole cd into a folder and install it form that, it works fine and doesnt even think ive pirated anything.
It asks me to insert the cd when i rund the shortcut on the desktop, i do that and it loads up no probs.....stupid EA, they break everything.
How about you just crack the games.
If you crack them you cant play them online, well, all the EA ones anyway which is practicaly the entire gaming market for pc.
| Quote : How about you just crack the games. |
I do, I use a fixed .exe to play the games. I'm not going to let something stupid like this prevent me from playing my games I payed for.
I just want to figure out how to make them work w/o cracking every single one.
| Quote : If you crack them you cant play them online, well, all the EA ones anyway which is practicaly the entire gaming market for pc. |
I play BF2142 online all the time with a fixed .exe. There is one that is identical in almost every way to the normal .exe, so it's almost undetectable.
Even with punbuster? i thought punkbuster was surrposed to stop that kind of **** happening (even though you have actualy paid for you game).
Punkbuster is another pointles spiece of sortware that kicks you from servers for no reason then. lol.........
Well, I'm not adding anything, hooking, or "injecting" anything into the game... so PB doesn't really see anything wrong. All I did was replace the original .exe with one that says I don't need the CD.
sounds like you need to do.. the last resort, contact customer support oh noooooooooooooooooooooooooo.

Yeah i no but punkbuster is SURPOSED to pick that sort of stuff up, even a tiny code change in the exe file or so it says on thier website, or i read it somewhere, silly nazi propaganda again i probably read.
| Quote : sounds like you need to do.. the last resort, contact customer support oh noooooooooooooooooooooooooo. |
Haha, I'm trying to avoid it like the plague.
Tech Support: *with a heavy accent* Hi, my name is Josh, how may I help you? (I love how they are always named Josh, John, or Sally... lol)
Me: I'm trying to play this game, but my DVD-ROM won't auto-read this disk. I've updated both the Motherboard and DVD-ROM to the latest drivers & firmware.
Tech Support: Ok, have you updated your drivers and firmware on your DVD-ROM?
...
Tech Support: Next I'm going to have your power down your computer for three minutes.
Me: What good will that do?
Tech Support: Trust me sir, I'm reading from a book. Now if you don't want to keep this call on a professional level, I will be forced to hang up on you.
/facepalm
They cant be any worse than ringing a HP support line, they dont seem to understand the concept of what they are doing. NUMPTIES!
When I lived with my rents, they used to have AOL... well, one day only one person at a time could log on even though we were on a router. So, I get a little pissed and called them... the dude argued with me for over an hour trying to convince me that I needed to "buy extra IP's for my household"... That dumb b&^* obviously didn't understand the concept of NAT (Network Address Translation) and finally admitted defeat after I intellectually beat him into the ground. In the end there was going to be some bull service charge to allow more than one person per household to be logged on to the AOL service at one time... When I asked to speak to his supervisor, he said the IP thing was simply a "misunderstanding" on his part. So, we canceled our subscription and went with Road Runner.
It's sad the way that some tech support will treat people then they believe that the caller doesn't have any technical knowledge... always a surprise when I get to talk with them.
Anyways, waiting on a response from ASUS at the moment. Hopefully I don't get the candidate of the Special Olympics answering my e-mails.
i bet you a £100 they refer you to thier *** sorry i mean FAQ section, which on the asus website is utter bollocks, its n00by questions like "Q: my pc doesnt work.....A: Is the power cable plugged in?"
Yeah, I went through all the FAQs in the DVD-ROM section... but now that you mention it, I should have added that to my e-mail so they don't refer me to it. Doh. >.>

Even if you did, they would still refer you to it, its porbably an automated email you get "we appriciate your concern with us" type of rubbish.
Seriously their not worth the group of periodic elements that they are made of. You may get a better result if you ask presedent bush? At least he knows what a cd/dvd drive is.......actualy thats not true either!. lol.......
It's funny how anyone that tech savvy is so willing to do anything BUT contact the manufacturer's tech support... lol
Don't you hate when you call tech support and seem to know more than they do?
just going to toss in my 2 cents here..
do you have any virtual drive software installed? Some games have a fit from that.

WOW.....thats bad
| Quote : do you have any virtual drive software installed? Some games have a fit from that. |
Nah, I all I have is the few games that I mentioned above, Firefox, Winrar, and Media Player Classic (ftw). I'm still waiting on an answer from ASUS...
I know the games copy protection, especially as of late, is going crazy over virtual drives from Daemon Tools or Alcohol. It's kind of funny though... crackers have already made some hiding software that will make it go undetected from the copy protection. >.>
I notice that all the SATA devices I have installed show up as removable media. (Just like a flash drive or something) I'm wondering if maybe the game is thinking that is some kind of virtual drive or just doesn't want to read from it because it thinks it's external? If that's the case, does anyone know of a way to install it in such a way that it does not appear as removable?
look and see if you can get your drive in IDE mode. Unfortunately i am not sure how windows would react to this... but i was gonna mention sata, my DVD drive shows as SCSI so i figured it was fixed.....in the bios there is an option for sata to operate in IDE mode, but as i say, i am not sure how windows will react to your hard drive going from sata to IDE....there is no real performance difference....
I fixed this problem just a few weeks ago on a friends computer to get Brother in Arms to play. If it is the same problem to fix it go into:
Control Panel
System
Device Manager
IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers
Now select "primary IDE Channel" right click and choice properties. Click Advanced Settings tab and you will be greeted by the Drive settings.
The problem was with the Current Transfer Mode. Change this to "Ultra DMA Mode 5" in device 1 and "Ultra DMA Mode 2" in device 2.
I'm not sure if this is exactly the process but its something very similar. After you change this setting I think you need to reboot the computer.
Hope this helps.

It's pretty close to what you're decrsibing. I was messing with those settings a bit last night, but I think I was in a different device and I changed it from "Let BIOS select" to "PIO" but it didn't fix it. I'll try this when I get home tonight though.
PIO is BAD....i mean its so slow it can make DVD's skip, burns fail ect
I would also be wary of changing DMA5 to 2 since of you change the hard drive this will cut speed allot.....not everyone has there CD/DVD drive there.....did you try ide mode in the bios?
Nah, I'll try that as well once I get home. Hopefully it won't have any adverse effects on my HD though.
once last thing...
I have read that running windows default IDE drivers instead of Nvidia's works better.....so you may be able to roll back your ide drivers and get rid of the safe remove and see if its that.....
Hmm, that could be something as well. Thanks for the suggestion.

Have you tried removing the IDE Controller device from device manager and restarting so it reinstalls the drivers???
I haven't tried removing the IDE Controller specifically. I've only removed the DVD drive it self. Guess that's another thing to put on my checklist.
Also, I'm not sure if this effects anything, but I do have an IDE CD/CD-RW drive that is currently set as a master drive via the jumpers. I know this SATA drive, and the previous one I owned, didn't have any jumpers for master, slave, or CS.
Sata is jumper free(with the exception the the 150/300 jumper on hard drives..)....since its one drive per cable....
I figured that was the case, just wasn't sure if the IDE drive set to the Master that maybe the games were trying to search that location for the media instead of my DVD drive.
Also, ASUS tech support got back with me with one of the most unhelpful responses every... haha. (This is from a Level 3 Tech Engineer, supposedly)

Ok, I guess they're tying to tell me it's broken, but they say "If your product needs to be exchanged or repaired..." How am I supposed to know if it's broken? It seems to work find other than the problem I'm having above.
well see what your troubleshooting shows....also searching the net someone mentioned the remove thing being Nvidia driver related....so thats why i am suggesting trying to roll back all your ide drivers to windows defaults to see if that helps...
I had a similar problem. I was using Windows Vista
I had set the executable for single player mode to Compatibility mode: Windows XP
I have the steps or resolution to change the compatibility mode in the forums of:

Hope this helps. So simple

Well that happens from time to time when the customer is getting...violent. In all my years i can recall 2 or 3 cases.
Most times, it is situations that puts the equipment out-of-warranty.
Like blogging with the laptop very near a 40w lamp, leaving it on overnight and then discovering that the lamp melted the plastic cover (and damadge the LCD panel in the process) due to 8 or more hours of exposition. Can't reveal name, dates, brands or models, because i got a NDA on my ass, but things like that are quite more common that you can think of. And after dumping the lappy on the swimming pool, go for a safari with it, go to the beach with it, forgetting the pen on the lappys keyboard and closing it with considerable amount of strength, dropping a glass filled with wine on top of it, plugging a 110v AC in a 220V plug.......and they still think it is covered by the warranty. I could be posting here for ever and ever on reasons and cases really.
Trust me on this one, some rules of customer support exist for very good reasons.
The only time I had a problem like this was GTA: San Andreas. I absolutely could not get that game to start to save my life.
I had to download the no-CD crack. But that was for version 1.00. Mine was version 2.00 (the one Rockstar released to prevent mods like Hot Coffee). So then I had to download a patch that downgraded it to 1.00. Then I could get the game to boot up in less than a second with the no-CD crack.
Funny I had to do all this shady stuff just so I could play a legitimately purchased version of the game.
Well if you really bought the game contact the company and ask them for support, they will help you out with this.
I think you will learn something for this support either so check it out and see for yourself if games are worth buying.

Punkbuster is the biggest joke for those of us who play competitivly. My clan was a top 25 BF2 TWL team for ages, but everyone in front of us was clearly (and it was pretty clear) abusing the system. (After 3 years, you know what can and can not be done). To bad its impossible to prove anyone guilty...
Whats your DVD drive? Also, try using the autorun and starting the game from the menu that pops up (if that fails, then something is REALLY messed up). Also, did you add a HD recently? Its possible the drive letter somehow got changed...
HAHAHA stupid PB.
So far it banned 2 computers at my place. One was right off a clean install and just had Wolf ET on it. the other just started kicking with init failures then eventually HW banned the damn system.
Contact them. You where cheating, Locked support ticket.
What a useless software, I have seen so many cheaters on PB servers. It does not even kick them or anything.
I read later that others have had this from router firewall settings.
| nukemaster wrote : HAHAHA stupid PB.
|
As a rule, PBSetup.exe is your friend; it keeps PB updated, as you often get kicked from a server before it updates itself...
The easiest way to ensure no one is cheating: Calculate (not check, actually calculate) the checksum for each file needed to run the game prior to loading in a server. Its very hard to make specific changes without messing that up...
i used to run pbwebupdate or whatever it was often, but that does NOT explain there false banning of 2 computers here, computers that have NEVER cheated, and one was NEW.
