Why not KT400? what's wrong with it?

I've just bought a new MOB msi-6590 VIA KT400 I didn't even installed it yet, may I'll do it on weekend. But I sincerely would like to know, does it crashes all the time? How sux is it? If it is so waste as most people here says so why asus, abit, soyo, msi, and others choose this chipset to manufacture their MoB? Finally, does anybody that has a kt-400 chipset have something to say?

It's not a terrible chipset, just not a top notch one. Those companies also made Intel 810 chipset boards, which is the worst chipset Intel has made in years. They make whatever sells, they make what the customers ask for.

What they are bitching about, mainly, is the DDR400 just doesn't give any improvement over DDR333, on that chipset.

The chipset isn't anything terrible. It's just not as good as we were expecting.

It seems like it's got some bugs to work out too, between video cards and Soundblaster stuff. Which really isn't anything new to VIA.

If you can find (decent) PC2700, you might as well buy it instead of PC3200. As long as it's cheaper.

It's also possible to buy PC3200 (decent), and drop the timings down when you run it at 166mhz. Which is what I opted to do. There is a noticable performance improvement with a 166mhz fsb, as opposed to a 133fsb.

Now THERE's a reason to "upgrade" to the KT400 and DDR400, no performance decrease over the KT333/DDR333!

I don't know, I've had an a7v8x for a few weeks now, and I haven't had any problems with it. It's been as stable as any MOBO I've ever owned.

Plus, it unlocks the multiplier on my XP 2400! :-D

how the hell can a mother board unlock your cpu? just cause you can change the mult. setting in bios dosnt mean youre really changing it. but.. if youre sure, i guess this could just be a case of... COMPUTER RELATED PARANORMAL ACTIVITIES.
as far as i know though, u gotta unlock it via connecting the l1 bridges, which is what i did, to change the multi.
