cool. only ever seen this once before, many years ago on a poor monitor that displayed some unix command line.

but this HP system here at work is relitavely new, p3-600 or so... yet its got the ubiquitous novel login window burnt into the center of the monitor... wierd.

anyone else seen that?

Not recently.
But it still happens to people who don't shut their monitors off at work and leave the same window open overnight and on weekends.

I see it all the time. This is what happens if you don't have a screensaver and you leave your computer on 24 hours a day.

mmmmm

and they just LOVE running these monitors at 800x600 @ 60hz too! even under fluorescent lights too. shocking.

fortunately at home i institute a far better policy allround.

800x600 @ 120
1024x768 @ 100
and monitor goes to low power mode after only 5 minutes of inactivity :)

wonder how much electricity is wasted for a single monitor to be on almost all of the time?
must be buckloads each year

I have my monitor set to screensaver after 15 minutes and standby after 30 minutes.

1024 x 768 @ 85Hz

i dont bother with a screensaver... besides, it wastes valuable cpu time that could be spent running cure for cancer.

and i would try for 1024x768 @ 117hz, but that would require me reinstalling some modified win2k detonator drivers.... and im too lazy

i got 2 17" viewsonics side by side. with matrox card you can use them 2 ways. stretch the one desktop to both or run each with seperate rez/refresh/etc. so really both monitors are running each at 1280x1024.

That's cool. I did that for a while, but my monitors were different sizes and quality.

did u know that dell dont use ATX compatible PSU's or motherboards?

they look compatible, but people have found that the connector pins have been changed around by dell, and only dell, so that you can only buy dell replacments!!!

and if u usesomething else the result can be nasty component death.
12v down the earth line anyone?

very underhanded of them.
and i bet they are marketed as atx compatible...except in the mega fine print

My first Delling was a Dimension that I sold last year.
My second Delling is a Inspiron 4000 Laptop.
My third Delling arrives this week which is a Inspiron 8100 Laptop.

I see images burned into screens all the time at banks and grocery stores. They seem to like to keep their ancient dos and unix software, and many times without a screen saver. So their crappy little 14 inch monitors get burned a lot.

nope... due to pecularities with our network and software incompatibilities, win98, win2k and even xp have troubles running, thus, a couple of them, including the one in question still have glorious win95!

so when people DO use em half the time they crash... or loose settings... or just go bananas. thus they arnt used very much.

Lol, same at my school w/ teh 60Hz and all. Well, a little registry edit file i made and task scheduler fixed that:) Naturally teh system admin got pissed, and ghosted EVERY computer over again. Lol, he hates my ass (he's not exactl system admin, more of a guy who works at an authorized dell tech center and comes in and fixes our comps- scary ass guy, like 6'7"!) Anyways, we're getting a REAL system admin next year (the oreious one got fired), and hopefully we'll become freinds, and I'll get to tweak, like I did to before w/o anyone caring:)

Sig of the week.
