Hi,
Just got a new computer with P4 530 and motherbord which uses the 915G, HDD
80 GB and 2 DVD RW, modem USRobotics. Installed Win XP Pro SP1a. Everything
fine except:
1) Device manager shows a missing PCI driver which can be found nowhere. I
searched Win XP disk and motherbord's disk in vain. I uninstalled it, but
comes back. Please help me to find this driver.
2) If the modem if off, start the computer and switch the modem on,
device manager doesn't show the modem. If I keep the modem on, and boot then
the device manager shows the modem ok, but when I try to see the properties,
it takes one minute to show up. Why XP doesn't keep the driver and
properties take so long to show up?

After you installed XP did you install ALL the motherboard drivers on the CD
that came with it? Should have been chipset, audio and/or video (if on
motherboard), etc.

1) Visit the web site of the motherboard manufacturer to locate
motherboard drivers.
2) During boot, Windows polls for attached devices. When an external
device (such as a modem) is powered off, it can not tell Windows that it
exists, so Windows does not load drivers.
The exception to this rule is USB devices which, if properly designed,
announce themselves to Windows as soon as they receive power from the USB
cable.

Hi Jerry and Joust in Jest,
Thank you for your prompt reply which helped me solve my problems about the
driver
and the modem.
..
You were right for the drivers. Audio drivers were missing. Installing them
from motherbord's
CD solved the problem. Much appreciated.
Chris
