Try disabling your firewall. Maybe you have a 3rd party firewall that
you didn't mention. Maybe you have Windows XP with Service Pack 1 and
have its Internet Connection Firewall (ICF) enabled. Maybe you
installed Service Pack 2 and have its Windows Firewall enabled. See
what happens when you disable the firewall. If browsing then work, you
will have to configure your firewall. Since ICF and Windows Firewall do
nothing to restrict or control outbound-initiated connections, I don't
see how those would interfere with browsing (but then I've never
bothered to use the Windows-supplied firewall).

If you can dial-up to AOL but you cannot even reach AOL's own web pages
then you can call them to get tech support.

Then your "friend" did NOT sell you a legal copy of the software. You
got burned by your friend. Get the number that your "friend" had for
the software, sue them, or eat the loss and buy a legal copy.

you may have to reinstall AOL, to make your connections
accessible.
