ASUS P4T533 seriously unstable

Trying to get an Asus P4T533 running with P4 3.06Ghz and 2 X 512Mb Samsung 4200 RIMM, but it is crashing and freezing seriously just running business apps under XP Pro. I'm lucky if I get 15 minutes work out of it!! The other components are all market leaders (Adaptec 29320, ATI All-in-Wonder 8500DV, with a Plextor CD/RW and a Seagate Cheetah 15K.) Have tried two copies of the motherboard (Rev 1.03), have upgraded BIOS to latest 1005, have tried different Samsung memory sticks, all no joy. Asus has had a couple of (ineffective) guesses about fixing the problem and are currently suggesting a fan for the Northbridge array. I need a completely reliable system... am I pursuing long term grief with this product? Advice, opinions welcome.

Bummer! I note on the Intel web site these 3.06 chips pull over 80 watts under load. My thought would be to ask what kind of power supply do you have? You may need to buy something bigger...

The other thought I had was to suggest you put a slower P4 in to see if it runs stable with a lesser chip. You're pushing the envelope with that new 3.06 so it's tough to say where the problem might be.

Scout, thanks for the response. The power supply is an Enermax 465-watt. It's feeding barely more than basic req'ts: one each of scsi hard drive, scsi adapter, CD drive, video, NIC, floppy, and the mainboard with 512Mb or 2 X 512Mb RIMMs. The RIMMS do get pretty hot, hotter than anything else on the board that I can touch. I'll see if the dealer is up for swapping in a slower processor. It's a good idea for an experiment, but I HAD a good slower system. I didn't spend CAN$4,000 and a week of grief for another slow system! :-(

Contact the retailer you bought the board from immediately. There is a newer revision of the board with better power curcuitry. The only way to tell the difference of the board is there is active cooling on the northbride. Do so immeadiately, I should know since I have the same board and did the same thing.

Sounds like you've purchased all premium equipment. The other tact would be to switch to a DDR solution. Get one of the PE boards that support the Hyper Threading and you may get the stability you seek. Your vendor should be able to switch the board and memory for you since the current setup won't work. You'll probably save some $$$ in the process too! I know it's slightly slower than your 850 board, but if it doesn't run stable...

Thanks Jeremy. Hope you don't mind a few questions. Is this new rev still called REV 1.03? Are you running 3.06Ghz? 1Gb of 4200?

Thanks.

No I am running a 2.53 512 4200. My friend on the other hand is running a box like yours but with 512 mem. Yes they are labled yet with 1.03, I contacted Asus on this issue and got no responce.

Also be very sure you have a very good PS I recently had to move to a 400watt switching PS to meet the electrical requirements of this board. Its damned fast peice of hardware I wouldnt trade it for some slow DDR platform anyday.
