I was upgrading my windows 98 laptop to xp pro. the set
up was complete and doing the final reboot before xp
started up. during the reboot a message popped up
saying "windows could not start because the following
file is missing or corrupt:
\windows\system\vgaoem.fom
then it said I could attempt to repair using original
windows setup cd-rom and selecting "r" at the first
screen. I have tried everything I have here and nothing
works. from this point all that i know to do is rebuild
the harddrive and lose the info that is there, not a lot
but I don't want to have to reload all programs. do you
have any ideas?
Thank you,
Mike

Thats the way to go if you want to stick with 98.Youre best bet is
to boot to xp pro cd,select install xp,new copy, delete the partition,
create one, then let xp format and install.XP wont need any 98 data
at all, this way you can install with ntfs file system and do a "clean
install".
