Hardware support?

Does anyone know if the "Do-It-Yourself PC-System"
works well with Linux(preferably Red Hat or Slackware)?

I don't see anything there that should cause any problems. Not sure about DVD playback though. I've never dealt with that.

One other note...If you need a modem, make sure you get a hardware modem, preferably ISA if that board has an ISA slot. Do NOT get a winmodem, they are not supported under Linux and a bad idea anyway. They now make PCI hardware modems, but I've heard of some difficulty configuring them with respect to ISA.

In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice.
In practice, there is.

I've gotten DVD playback to work in Linux by using xine or OMS. OMS will play pretty much any DVD you throw at it, but video's a bit jerky because mpeg2 playback isn't time-synced, it's just synced with audio cue points. xine 0.3.7 works much better for most DVD's. xine 0.4.x is out as well, though I haven't tried it yet.

PCI hardware modems do take a little bit more work to set up. This is primarily because when a PCI modem gets assigned resources, it often gets an IRQ that doesn't conform to typical IRQ's assigned to serial ports. The preferred method is to use a utility called setserial to properly associate the correct IRQ with the modem's serial port.

An ISA hard-jumpered modem would definitely be preferable though, and the performance difference between PCI and ISA modems has been measured at about 0.09% in favor of PCI. It's not worth fretting over such a small performance difference.

You may have a bit of trouble configuring your SB live Card, as well as the network Card. Both can be done but they often set up improperly on Via chipsets. But if your a Slackware user I'll assume you wont have too much trouble.
